Jefflaw77
if this winter is turns out to be something like 01-02 - i'll take a 93 storm thrown somewhere in there to balance things out - any day!... Mitchel Volk
I agree it ended the small snowfall winters for the I - 95. Superstorm 93 was truly a land mark storm. I believe it was the start date that global warming/climate change started to affect the winter weather patterns over the Northeast.for winter. Things have not been the same since that storm. Mitchel Volk
That could also be true. But, for the onset of the rapidly changing climate change I believe that SS93 was the one. In 1888 it was only just starting, now it seems that it is going off the charts just read Dr Jeff Masters on the Weather underground site.. Isotherm
lol at the people cancelling winter in November. I think we're all just joking around about cancelling winter, at least I was. 10-15 days ago there was speculation that Dec 1-10 would torch, but now it looks like a lock for colder than normal temps during the period. Now, the question becomes, when the +PNA ridging begins to weaken and/or retrograde into the more classic Nina Aleutian ridge position, will a -NAO or AO be waiting on the ground to catch us as we free fall? Or will there be nothing but solid concrete waiting to greet our faces? We're currently in free fall, but the PNA is our parachute making the fall much more enjoyable. The issue is, that parachute looks pretty cheap, and will probably pop in about 10-15 days, so we need something else to save us. Mr MJO? No, he'll still be PMSing dring mid December. Mr. AO? Well, the stratosphere's colder than the 7th circle of Hell so probably not. Mr NAO? I heard the Chinese have stolen our blocking so that's probably out as well. All in all, yeah, so how bout those Kocin books.
Isotherm
18z GFS ensembles valid 168hrs for the opening of December. I can paint a much uglier map than this. The PNA ridging is very nice, and will get December going on the colder side of normal. Scroll out through 384hrs and the Northeast stays out of the orange (warm). The arctic looks terrible as does the atlantic, and the PNA is morphing into a more typical nina RNA position by December 10th as notedin my last post. However, we can count on Dec 1-10 being colder than normal. Thereafter, it's looking more likely we'll see a back and forth or pacific orgin airmass period (aka not favorable) for Dec 10th-20th. The MJO will either be in phases 4-6 or not giving much help in the COD during this time frame. I still believe much better prospects lie ahead snow potential wise particularly for the last 1/3 of Dec. December does not look like a blowtorch or even warm month to me. Also - like last December - who cares if most of the month doesn't produce snow wise if we get a SECS or MECS in the final week? (or sure, HECS)
