Organizing Low
lol... complete disaster in Montreal. Everyone is bashing TheWeatherNetwork and Env.Can. this storm was a predominantly rainer in MTL a good 2 days ago on all the models, only the euro held out hope. my map had zilch ie the big zero in MTL, turns out even i wasnt far enough west with my accums lol. Logan11
It seems to me the threads are better if based on the wx events .... If a clipper is mainly affecting just eastern Ontario and Quebec then that makes sense. If it's a storm like this that traverses the whole area from BUF to YUL we could have broken off a separate thread, but one thread seems appropriate. But you can start any thread you want. We don't have Officer Bob in here patrolling every thread. I think. LOL we can stop supplying you with cold air if you like but seriouslty i was thinking about this, perhaps we should start a Canada thread within the upstate forum....thoughts? Organizing Low
officer bob lol well i dont actually think there are enough canadians to make the thread viable. plus i like to see what is going on in our 'neck of the woods' after all its all connected. for example, today i used this thread to see obs in WNY. but i defintely agree that event based threads are a good idea. i know Andy was doing that last year, and it was good i thought. then the lake effect thread was kept separate, and then another separate thread like this one for general discussion. maybe you or someone from upstate can start the event threads.....yay or nay? BuffaloWeather
Wasn't trying to be rude, just wanted to make sure I was in right forum. Montreal is 8 hours away from me. That is like having the same people in Chicago thread as Buffalo, just doesn't make much sense! And Logan, trust me nothing compares to LES snowstorms, I would not rank any synoptic systems I have been thru in 20 years in my top 20 snowfalls. All are LES events. Logan11
No doubt it's a very large area that this sub forum covers. It isn't so much a Canada vs. US thing - as it is an East versus West in terms of different climate areas. Montreal is only about 30 minutes from the other end of NY State so it fits in with our Northeast NY region. But we haven't got enough people participating right now to viably break up Upstate into two sub forums... So I think the way to handle it is event threads like a LES thread, a clipper thread if its mainly just affecting like Northern NY, Ottawa, Montreal, a Noreaster thread if next weeks phantom storm happens.... An argument could be made to throw Eastern NY in with the NE Sub-forum, but they didn't want us. LOL Wasn't trying to be rude, just wanted to make sure I was in right forum. Logan11
I'll start separate threads when they affect this side of the region. I'm sure the WNY people can start the LES threads, etc. Todays storm it just made sense to lump it in together because it was an event where it did move in a trajectory from BUF to YUL. We could have given it a dedicated thread. It wasn't really my party so I figured maybe someone getting a snow event might start one. officer bob lol well i dont actually think there are enough canadians to make the thread viable. plus i like to see what is going on in our 'neck of the woods' after all its all connected. for example, today i used this thread to see obs in WNY. but i defintely agree that event based threads are a good idea. i know Andy was doing that last year, and it was good i thought. then the lake effect thread was kept separate, and then another separate thread like this one for general discussion. maybe you or someone from upstate can start the event threads, i can do it too sometimes.....yay or nay? Logan11
We need more participants in general ...on the NE sub-forum they have a huge number of people. It must be the weather weenie capital of the world. If we had broken this thing into a couple threads ...like one for WNY/adjacent Ontario, and a second for northern/eastern NY, Ottawa etc.... We would have had maybe four or five total people chatting in each. i think we should start threads for big events only, just my 0.02 cents.. We've had a few "teases" but a 2-4" LES event, or a 1-3" synoptic event doesn't trip our trigger as much as it does for the folks E and SE of us....lol! Stash
Its telling how awful its been this season when this mess of a system generated as much interest as it did in these parts. The first real lake effect outbreak for WNY and/or developed system over the CC Canal for ENY will get everyone in better spirits, and more out of hiding. Agreed, it's not uncommon for the models to show something, drop it, then bring it back as the potential event gets closer. If it does come back in the next run or two, then we may finally be in for something interesting. One thing seems likely, the cold air 'ingredient' should be there and that's something we've been sorely missing in these parts...
Mr. Windcredible!
NAM finally came around with some decent QPF from the clipper on NYE. Not very widespread...but an area of ~0.1-0.4" QPF somewhat centered along the I-90 corridor. I expect those of you with elevation should be able to muster up a light little event on Saturday. For those of us in the capital region, really goes without saying that its a bit touch and go for BL temps. We know how well borderline BL temps have worked out for us. I'd like to see this thing 25-30 miles farther south than the 12z NAM, but who knows.
Flying MXZ
It's not much, but a nice wintery day today after the rain yesterday and last night. ~1" down this morning (and sticking to the roads) and down to 26.9° after being still above freezing this morning. Logan11
Another thought I had was allowing threads to appear in more than one sub-forum. I mentioned this in the NE side, but got no response. It seems to me the technology must exist to do this. Weather obviously doesn't follow political boundaries and sometimes a storm thread could appear in two areas... Not a regular thing, but just on occasion. Example ...next week's phantom storm. If it affects NE and primarily ENY, that dedicated storm thread could appear in both sub-forums. Or with yesterday's St. Lawrence Seaway track... such a dedicated thread could have cross-appeared in the Great Lakes sub-forum where I know some of the GTA people hang out. This wouldn't preclude people from starting smaller regional threads if they have enough posters to make it viable ..such as a western NY, Capital Region, Hudson Valley... But it would for allow more flexibility when the event dictates. yeah, when i was living in nyc, people used to say "hey i'm going upstate for the weekend" and i would aks where? BuffaloWeather
Springville and Colden got quite a bit of snow from the LES. Around 4-6 inches so far there. Logan11
Some flurries from Lake Ontario making it here, but the trajectory isn't optimum....it's more toward the Catskills and too multi-band. Organizing Low
i tell ya what, its a wintry day out there in the.....roads are a mess with black ice and light snow/ blowing snow and cold falling temps, to go along with the fresh blanket underneath. since the snow was so wet with the rain mixed in, all the trees and surfaces are frozen over with snow/ice. its funny how something like todays 'behind the storm weather' can totally change perception of the event. the storm didnt live up to expectations at all, but nooone wil remember that with weather we are getting today behind the storm.
