OKpowdah
Does anyone know of a good resource for information on the UKMET? Such as a history of the model, initialization methods, various detailed model specifications, strengths and weaknesses, biases, etc. Thanks! griteater
These links mention biases of the UKMet... http://www.personal.psu.edu/adb241/eWallTutorial/models/ukmet.htm (very bottom of page) http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/mdlbias/biastext.shtml
dtk
Does anyone know of a good resource for information on the UKMET? Such as a history of the model, initialization methods, various detailed model specifications, strengths and weaknesses, biases, etc. Thanks! I assume you mean the configuration they run for global forecasting (they use a Unified Model with many configurations). Some details can be found on their website: http://www.metoffice...s/unified-model http://www.metoffice...her-forecasting It's a gridpoint, nonhydrostatic model (most global models are actually hydrostatic), with 25 km horizontal resolution with 70 vertical layers. They use incremental, hybrid ensemble-4DVAR for model initialization (where they utilize a separate perturbation model for the inner loop in the minimization for 4DVAR). I can point you to specific references or technical documents (or dig up some details on the physical parameterizations) if you're really interested in the details. If you look at our (NCEP/EMC) verification statistics page, it is generally the second best operational global model in terms of many of the metrics we typically look at.
