dryslot
Well we've always had it. I think most topic specific forums have an OT side now. It gives a place for the community to discuss non wx related topics. The sports forum is pretty good here. PR has some issues, but regular OT isn't too bad if people are playing nice. Which they don't

weathafella
That's what I mean. People who have been camping out in front of Best Buy since Tuesday to save 100 bucks having another thing going...lol. It's more the fights and crap that break out. It's probably more prevalent in metropolitan areas where the ratio of azzholes to normal people is higher. The ***hole ratio is the same everywhere but obviously in cities there are more of them. And community standards are more forgiving so they're emboldened. 5 days of heat and then hopefully we don't see these ridiculous temperatures for a long time. Baroclinic Zone
We all support how the moderating is going. Obviously some posts stray a little off from the original topic, but we'd prefer to have them not steer off for over a page. It's probably best to have a thread solely dedicated towards skiing anyways. As for the Xmas song thread, c'mon Kev. We have always stated we only want 1 non weather related, banter thread. If we allow you to make them then we have to allow others to make them. If you want to post them in this thread feel free. The only thing I'd like to keep from this thread/forum are posts relating to the drama from the OT. I don't know why this is so hard for people to follow. Follow the forum rules that you all agreed upon when you joined here. http://www.americanwx.com/bb/index.php?app=forums&module=extras§ion=boardrules American Weather Rules & RestrictionsBoardwide Rules No porn or links to porn No threats of physical violence through postings or PMs No racist/sexist/ethnic/homophobic slurs No using PM system for personal gain/spam No advertising without prior admin approval Multiple accounts will get you banned Do not post threads asking why another member was warned/banned No political sigs, avatars or member titles No excessive trolling of other members You may not post private messages or any part thereof unless you have approval from the originator. Weather Forum Rules No politics/religious discussion No foul language No personal attacks/OT arguing Try to stay on topic Attack the idea, not the poster Spell out your forecast/thinking/opposing viewpoint clearly If you post a map, explain it Keep banter to a minimum during Storm Mode* (see below)

But you also need to understand the dynamics and chill with the keep on topic posts during non storm mode, non busy periods. It's like you are trying to excert authority. There is a time and place for moderation you just need to learn when the occasional OT posts aren't really harmful, really not old Yankee mentality. I have yet to see a complaint from our posters in our region. They know when to tighten up for the most part.

Leading up to storms I totally support cracking down on trolling and keeping OT posts where they belong. On a holiday weekend when it's in the 60s and nothing going on I think some OT posts in threads are fine... especially now with subforums we're not amassing these monster OT/banter threads in 1 main area. I'm just doing what I've been asked to do and follow the board rules. Some in here think they are exempt from them. They are not. I fully understand the dynamics. The dynamics are part of the problem, in case you didn't know. There has not been an influx of many new posters in our subforum like the other subforums on the board. We would like that to change. In case you hadn't noticed, I haven't deleted/moved every off topic/banter post I've come across, only the egregious ones. The complaints are there and they're not hard to find. Can you tell me why it's so hard to follow one simple rule? Stay on topic.

In the three years that I've been coming to the forums on Eastern and now American I think the ot banter in the New England thread has become much more tame. I was amazed at how respectful people were during the week leading up to the Halloween w/e storm. This is definitely the strongest regional forum on the board and I'm not saying that to toot (vim) our own horn. We have great met and non-met posters. I strongly agree that a few ot posts in a weather specific thread during an otherwise boring weather week at least keep the threads interesting if not amusing. A few posts are fine but to ramble on and on for hours about off topic discussion is ridiculous in a non-banter thread. Posting temp obs or emoticons in a pattern change thread accomplishes nothing. Some here act as if I'm not allowing you to have fun. That could not be the furthest from the truth. Just do it in the appropriate threads. I'm not alone in my thinking here. I have the backing of the other moderators as well as administrators.
