BxEngine
Can someone explain alittle better the PNA patterns? I understand the + and - PNA, but Im still unsure as to the mechanism I guess and how it creates the ridging in the east.
isohume
The PNA pattern is a rather complex topic and it's development and maintenance has to do with varying blocking features in the mean zonal flow, the placement and strength of the East Asian Jet as well the interactions with the current stage of ENSO and the Hawaii High. But generally...the reason there is probable ridging in the East is because during a -PNA period, the Hawaiian High tends to dominate the Aleutian Low and allows the Pacific Jet axis to reach it's peak lat across nw/rn Canada. This in turn sets off a teleconection response downstream and a High Plains trof matures...leading to very cold/stormy upper Midwest winters. Depending on the strength of the NAO and other global blocks...the East Coast is then under the influence of probable mean l/w ridge development. famartin
The PNA puts me at odds with Eastern snow lovers, since a good PNA for them is bad for me, and vice-versa.
