Weather References and Newbie Information

Burger, consider adding examples of the different storms. Not maps but like march 1993 miller a. March 09' ULL.

I was thinking of that, and in fact I do mention some storms in the post. However I've found when we mention storms even on here it leads to a lot of, "which one was that?" or "was that the one with X". So that's why I just opted for a short drier explanation.

By my post count, you can tell I mostly lurk from time-to-time, but thank you for the work you put in on this reference. What a great resource! I may have missed it in there, and if so, I am sorry, but one good reference to consider adding for Newbies is "the wedge" or CAD. I know that CAD conditions can impact many around the S.E.

Again, THANKS!

Good catch I'll try to add it this week.

You may want to also add the idea of what "540", "5400" thickness also.  A lot of newbies get confused between 0C @ 850 and 540 thicknesses.  Maybe link the thickness profile image to explain it better?  The one with the R/Sn/Mix/ etc broken down.

Do you possibly have a link for that image?

For all that do not know about the past events page at RDU, please read below. This might answer some questions for some!

Past Events Event Summaries, Case Studies and Event Maps:

The NWS Raleigh has a long tradition of providing event summaries and case studies for significant and unique meteorological events. The event summaries, case studies, and event maps serve many purposes including: a means to improve our meteorological understanding, a summary of the event for use as a training tool, a means to evaluate the station's performance (determining the training needs of the station and for individuals), and a review of the event for general interest needs. Our inventory of cases is well over 120 and it continues to grow.

I'm adding this because it's going to get swallowed in the disco thread.

For people who are interested in noaa recon missions:

I emailed the guy over at http://tropicalatlantic.com/ to turn back on the pacific google earth plugin since recons were flying for winter, he has it up now and it's located here:

http://tropicalglobe...eastandcentral/ the direct plugin link is here: http://tropicalglobe...ndcentral/live/

NON-TASKED missions are here: http://tropicalglobe...d.cgi?year=2013

updates every 5 minutes, also has an archive...love the in-browser plugin so you don't have to download Google Earth and the different data sets! Enjoy.

With the winter season fully underway, I thought it would be a good idea to create a thread that could contain links for the various websites that provide weather data, such as model guidance, climate data and research, weather blogs and commentary, etc.  I have seen several requests in various threads for this kind of data (I have made some myself) over the past few days, so I thought it would be a good idea to have a thread we could link to.

If this compilation already exisits, please feel free to delete this thread and point me to the correct place.  Otherwise, hopefully, this will turn out to be a helpful resource.

Please post your favorite websites with a brief description, if you are so inclined.
