You mentioning those 2 years together suggests you were very young. 1996-97 featured decent December snow, a cold January with a nice 4-8 snow for ENE and of course, one of the great blizzards of the 20th century 3/31-4/1.

It's '01/'02 that should make him cringe. NAO won't mean shiat if all it is doing, is shoving Pacific taint into SNE.

Dec 1996 was amazing here with the Cantore snow bomb...lol. Not so much on the CP...but you still had the first part of that double barreled event and then had some snow before New Years.

But it shows how we can still get a monster snow dump even in a warm pattern (esp in the interior). You definitely do not want to do it that way as odds don't favor it, but it can happen unlike areas who are even more married to the cold temps.

I was 16 during that winter, and the thing I remember the most was the Christmas Eve cold front. Intense snowsqualls off of Lake Huron buried Kitchener, Ontario with up to a foot of snow.

The first piece was a huge bust...was supposed to be all rain. I of course was at a meeting in Orlando. This was before most of us had cell phones. My wife leaves a message on the hotel phone....."snowing .....hard". That was in the midstt of my long losing streak culminating in my being stranded for the December 2003 storm in Dallas.

I remember the 12/30 one...I think it was that day. The morning of Jan 1 was really cold iirc.

It looks like it was 12/31 and 1/2...

I was only 8.... I don't remember jack s*** of 96-97... just heard from posts on here... Ironically the first winter I followed weather was 00-01. I specifially remember that epic dryslot on the New Years day noreaster. That was the first event I followed. What got me started in following weather was a TWC chat online with Mike Sidel regarding the New Years day storm. I remember that vividly. Probably the best winter in SNH in a while.

Remember the system that was supposed to miss us south. My wife and were of course watching TWC and she looks at the loop and declares we're getting nailed. I ridiculed her but the next morning I awaken to S+. Her street cred went way up with me that weekend. 2 months later I installed a pentium computer....just out then with 14.4 dial up. Remember the funny sound? Now in the IT world that's referred to as a POTS line.

The thing that drove me nuts about the storms in Jan and even Feb of '97, was that they flipped to rain so many times. There must have been several events where I went to bed and it was snowing...only to wake up to see some mangled piles from a plow and slush dripping off my car. There was that one surprise event in Jan that hit pretty good. That started as a little system near Kentucky and next thing I know..I wake up to like 6" of snow..lol. I was in Hyde Park at the time, but se mass had close to 10" I think.

I got about a half inch to an inch of heavy snow for 45 minutes and then it stopped...i was so pissed. Meanwhile they had a Patriots game in Foxboro the next day that had huge snow banks plowed off the field next tot he stands. I remember Drew Bledsoe being tackled out of bounds and into one of those snow piles and it made me even angrier.

But I deserved to be punched anyway since we had so many more gifts that winter...mostly Dec 1996 Cantore snow bomb.

I couldn't even imagine trying to have weather as a hobby without computers Jerry.. what the hell was it like? Would you just follow TV Mets for a storm? No models, no radar capabilry at home

Must of just been gear up for a monster, sit back turn on the fire, open up the a bottle of red, and ride it out

You kept watching the Weather Channel waiting for them to change their forecast....you watched the 6pm and 11pm local news like a hawk...and the morning news. Waiting for Burbank or Harvey Leonard to update.

It was easy back then because we didn't have any idea of computers or the models coming out available to us so easily.

In 30 years, people will be asking the same question about us now...how the hell did we watch the weather back in 2011 with this crap we have now?

We did that all the way up into the late 90s...lol. Well I guess in '96 or '97 you had the ability, but I lived and died through TV forecasts through the mid 90s at least. The sickest weenie knows how awesome it was to have those morning updates at 7:25 and 8:25 am.
