We tried to drive my grandparents to the Auto train in Lorton and we made it like 1 mile and got stuck and turned around....I was 15......My mom let my grandparents smoke inside the house since it was snowing and the house reeked.....great storm.....not a bad winter either....the early January storm was solid and stuck around forever....

Richmond got 5 inches from this and it was the 2nd largest November event. I was 6 years old and I do not remember it, but I do recall the early January 7-8, 1988 storm.

that was a very good event....around 8" fell on top of 2-4" that fell earlier in the week so the timing was perfect to maximize snow days and delays....especially when everyone was on guard after the 86-87 winter and some really bad cleanup after the storms in January.....the timing plus the frigid air mass plus the sun angle made it a memorable event....there was snow/ice caked on sidewalks for quite a while....no serious melting until 7-10 days later....then we got another storm around the 25th that was much bigger in the burbs but was pretty low impact....outside of the 1-3 to 1-15 period and the Veterans day storm, it was a pretty boring winter, though some serious air masses

I was living in Texas at the time unfortunately so I missed it in New England. But it has always been a very interesting storm for me to go back and look at because of the anomalous locations it snowed. The same type of anomalous snow pattern (for early season events especially) happened up in SNE like it did in the DCA area...normally you expect the best snows to be N&W...but there were amounts that broke a foot right down to the coastline in Plymouth, MA and around the Cape Cod Canal.

It was one peculiar storm. Not your classic gray overcast starts to snow but a partly cloudy day turns very snowy very quickly. Got around 7 inches where I lived at the time in NE Baltimore.

I was living existing in Glen Burnie and only got around 6"

I was watching the DC stations and couldn't believe how PG County, the next county over for those unfamiliar with the area, was getting between 12-14"

I loved this storm. I was at work at Tenleytown, listening to the radio, hearing forecasts of 1-3", then 2-4", then 4-8", then 8-12", and every time there was already almost more snow on the ground than the "new" forecast. My office was only about a block from the old WTOP studios, and I kept saying, "Come on, look out your dang window!"

i was staying overnight at a friends house in perry hall. i was awakened by the sound of thunder. i was like "what the hell was that?" looked outside and got my answer. had to be coming down at close to 3 inches a minute for a short period of time.

btw, sue palka is a total sweetheart. she often called our office to chat it up about the forecast. she was not obnoxious about it at all. she does not have a degree, but her experience in the area for so long has made her a savvy forecaster.

Not a fan of Palka at all.

Palka is cool, we go to the same church. I see her sometimes, when I actually go.

6th grade in Kensington on that storm. If I remember right that was a rather "sticky" snow. I have to check the old family pictures. We had a huge yard in Kensington, so lots of trees and wood area in the back to capture good pictures just hanging out the 2nd floor windows.

Oh...and yes.....1980s was full of goofy looking people and fashion. Let's say two words: shoulder pads!
