Where's Katrina?

1974/2011 Super Outbreaks are up there. I went with the 1974 outbreak due the insane amount of violent tornadoes and the huge geographical area (The 2011 outbreak could have easily covered a similar area, if that MCS didn't come through those states to the north during the morning and instead left them convective junk-free)

Around IMBY, the 2006 Hanukkah Eve Blowdown would probably be my most impressive.

My bad, that was a complete disaster, I knew I was forgetting something.

Other storms that I forgot are Hurricane Camille, 1935 labor day hurricane, Hurricane Donna, 1978 Midwest Snowstorm, Columbus Day storm of 1950 for those in the pacific, Hurricane Charley, Hurricane Wilma, Hurricane Frances, Hurricane Jeanne, Hurricane Isabel, Hurricane Fran, Christmas Supercold outbreak of 1980, Christmas eve storm of 1994, 1962 ash Wednesday storm, 1991 Perfect storm, Hurricane Bob, 1953 Worcester tornado, Tri State tornado of 1925, 1994 Northridge Earthquake, 1989 World Series Earthquake, Tropical Storm Allison 2001, Andover KS f5 tornado of 1991, 1985 Pennsylvania F5 tornado, Hurricane Carol, Hurricane Edna, January 2011 Midwest snowstorm , Hurricane Betsy, Hurricane Frederic and many more that I probably just cant remember right now

I was in Hurricane Katrina south FL landfall.. before the hurricane hit my family arranged plans to visit New Orleans on [Canadian] Thanksgiving weekend 2005 [October] :yikes:... the day we left for FL [August 19 2005] tornadoes and supercells tore up SWON causing the largest insurance loss in Ontario history. A mile wide tornado passed just 10km north of here hours after we took off for Buffalo airport. heh funny how it happens

I choose April 27 as my top weather event. The Super Outbreak is in a sense IMBY, so I my be a little biased. However, while Joplin takes the cake for the most overall destruction, Smithville and Hackleburg/Phil Campbell have the most incredible damage I've seen, even rivaling or matching Jarrell,TX.(especially considering these beasts we moving 50-60mph) Then considering the question that could we have had another EF5 or two had they destroyed a structure worth that rating.

I've always wondered what the people that had the Superoutbreak of '74 burned into their memory felt like. I know that feeling now.

This sorta depends on where you live :guitar: but in terms of impact/rarity, I'd probably have a top 3 of the Superstorm, 2011 and 1974 tornado outbreaks, and Hurricane Andrew. Well, that's 4.

This appears to be meant to be completely independent of IMBY considerations. Greatest weather event ever purely by meteorology ... IMO at least.

There was a lot of incredible damage in Joplin. The vids from down there in Smithville and Phil Campbell look very similar to Joplin except the houses weren't as tightly packed.

Oh yeah, that one too for around here.

Tri-State Tornado, if it was one continual path (which most believe it is) may take the cake.

That's a pretty good one. I'd normally have a hard time picking a single tornado as a top weather event but it is a benchmark in multiple ways.

Yeah that's how I took it. If we go local then one of my picks would be the 1965 Palm Sunday outbreak. 500 mb jet streak of 140 kts is the height of absurdity.

Do you mean Columbus Day 1962? Maybe you're confusing it with the Great Appalachian Storm.

http://en.wikipedia....y_Storm_of_1962

This list is a little America-centric ;) lol

Yeah, why include any extratropical cyclones and leave out the strongest of them all: the Braer Storm? (at least in the Atlantic, having trouble finding data for Pacific and Southern Ocean.)

Typhoon Tip

Yeah, +1 to that.

Honorable mention: May, 1896 and May 1st-10th, 2003 for insane tornadic activity, along with April, 2011 as whole, of course, the 1999 Bridge Creek/Moore Tornado (301 +/-20 mph wind has to count for something, right?), the GHD Blizzard and the October 2011 Snowstorm just for sheer rareness...

Outside the U.S. would probably go to Typhoon Tip, the 1984 tornado outbreak in Russia, the 1970 Bhola Cyclone, along with a slew of others...
