Very light snow/flurries now with temperature at 25 F and wind at 10 mph. We have a very light dusting here at the moment. Talked with a friend who lives in northwestern part of county and they seemed to have done better than me. Look for things to pick up for us in the overnight hours.

That's good info. NWS in Morristown seemed to think our best chances for snow were 21z tonight to 6z tomorrow. My roads in front of my house are slick - not awful, but slick. Normally, the rain will dry off in the wind, but this was a quick freeze. Glad I'm not having to commute tonight.

That was interesting watching the humidity and DP rising while it was snowing and now falling as it's dried out. I noticed it rising before it started snowing, I guess I need to watch it closer!

Keep your eyes peeled...a nice burst of snow just coated my driveway and part of the street in front of me, with a solid dusting everywhere. Pic is incoming...

Do you think the possible lee trough will move eastward over the next few hours and help you and I out, eyewall?

You have a much better shot than I do but it isn't impossible. RAH is also hinting at snow showers by you tonight.. I have to hope for some rogue precip down this way.

32.9 - with moderate snow

Same band hitting Hickory. Will be up in Big Frosty land soon. Fact it should hit him square between the eyes. I'll bet he gets an inch out of it, espeacilly with sun going down, This will get him close to about 40% of his seasonal average and the first official day of winter isn't even here yet. Of Course he could be moaning the blues with the big coastal the euro has for Saturday, Hopefully not.

there is a stray band that keep redeveloping from shelby up towards wilkesboro. kinda of a freak event. just getting lucky it appears.

like Eyewall said, the surface plot shows a lee trough because cold air is bending around the mountains from the south. The development is ongoing for upper Rutherford county now just to my north. Wish this would have started in the Upstate, but looks like you guys further north toward Hickory are going to be a large mass of precip soon. The South Mountains are getting upsloped!:lmao:

Holy cow....pouring snow. Temp is 23.6. Visibility is less than 1/2 mile based on things I can usually see off in the distance.

Good for you man seems like you usually get slotted or warm nosed, or otherwise screwed most of these events so I'm glad to see that in your back yard.

As for here, still light snow, 21.0, pretty much stabilzied near 21, it seems. Roads are basically skating rinks in my area.

On another note:

I don't think DOT pre-treated ANYTHING around here. Do you guys think it was because of the call from NOAA because of the criteria change? We only had WWA for our area, but I can't see how 3-4" doesn't exceed WWA? It seems ridiculous to me that the DOT trucks in this area appear to be inactive while the roads freeze up. Surely people know that when there's water on the road, and the temps were supposed to crash into the teens, that at least they should gravel some of the bridges and such.

Its more a mid level trough at least from what I can tell on 850 charts. The biggest issue is overcoming dry air. The upper low means business though so dont be shocked of something later on.

Alright, cool. Thanks, guys.

Our problem around here is that the DOT usually treats roads when they don't even need to. Last winter, I can recall numerous occasions where there was salt brine out on the roads, yet nothing but cold rain fell. Looks like you have the opposite problem, though. I reckon it's better to treat the roads unnecessarily than not treat them when they're covered with ice and snow.

Light snow currently here but everything is white. I was in Hickory for the better part of the afternoon. Started as rain, then mixed with sleet and suddenly turned to all snow still not much accumulation yet, as we came north on 16 towards Alexander county.. many areas had a good dusting. What a suprise!

your fine on the euro, I was being sarcastic how you and pilot tend to get left out on the coastals over the past decade. Your off to such a great start, Whats the odds of back to back big years. last year and then now (so-far) this year.

I agree this year is off to a good start hopefully the wheel don't run off soon. lol

Sometime when your're up this way visiting family hollar at maybe we can meet and have a cup of coffee or something ? Always nice to meet people you talk to over the internet and never see. If you want to just send me a pm a couple days ahead of time..

That band is almost here and I'm getting ready to leave for church, Maybe the ground will be white when I get out. :scooter:

Will do. Looks like the band heading your way is reconfiguring more west-east on last radar frames, also noticing more echoes breaking containment'

Great call, already getting more snow in Western Iredell than I ever would have thought.

The DOT kinda got stuck in a tough situation. I remember hearing on WLOS last night that the crews who worked the roads in Buncombe and Madison Counties didn't add the salt brime because the forecast given to the DOT was for this morning's event to start as liquid which would have washed the solution off the roads in effect wasting it. They also stated that due to the amount of salt and sand already on the road from the early week event, that they would just scrape and add slag as needed.

Obviously the precip for most everyone was frozen from the start. The DOT maybe would have taken a different approach if they knew that all along. Also by personal experience I know that each county does their snow removal in different ways. I feel like the folks here in McDowell generally do a very good job working the roads. On several occasions I've used primary roads that were scraped clear in McDowell County only for it to be snow-packed in a neighboring county.
