Joint MJO Task Force

It's good to see the information-sharing taking place regrding this important research area. UCAR's YOTC MJO Task Force (which itself is alreay a joint collaboration between THORPEX, WCRP and WWRP) is hooking up with WCRP's GEWEX to evaluate and compare their independent MJO models and observations. They'll look at three experimental components: climatological simulations, modeled, physics-based reanalysis and analysis of modeled hindcasts against target MJO events. Good stuff. Seriously though, regarding participation, there are opportunities for organizations or credentialed individuals to participate in the diagnostic and data analysis of the climatological integrations surrounding the diabatic heating associated with the MJO. More MJO research, this time from our friends at DOE. The AMIE project extends the collection of validation data of CINDY2011 and DYNAMO to the east to include Manus Island in Papua New Guinea, where the MJO strengthens again after weakening over the area around the maritime "continent" of Indonesia and the Philippines. These are your stimulus $$ at work, ladies and gents.

That list is more than just the MJO research tools, it includes a vast array of sensors measuring the affects on radation by anthropogenic aerosols and their effect on precipitation, cloud physics (abstract) and global or regional cooling (abstract).

Also, the first set of preliminary findings (on the large-scale organization of tropical convection) for the GEWEX portion of the project will be discussed at Pan-GASS at NCAR in Boulder this September. They'll also be discussing:

- High resolution modelling, the gray-zone and stochastic physics

- A breakout on tropical convection observed during the CINDY/DYNAMO referenced in earlier posts

- A plenary session on progress in representing atmospheric processes in weather and climate models

- Another plenary on boundary layer processes and clouds

Anyone going to Pan-GASS, remember, the deadline to sign up is 15 May 2012.
