SACRUS
Great stuff as always Unc. What an event and past few years we have been having with weather extremes.
bluewave
Great job putting all those stats together, Uncle. You can see how the snowiest decades matched up with the better blocking patterns. The 50's would have been snowier if the blocking was a bit further north like the 60's. The changing PDO signal in the Pacific is also interesting to see. green tube
holy crap..... i didnt realize NYC once went 5 straight decades averaging over 30" you have to wonder how many more before 1870 were just as good.

Isotherm
I believe the major difference between now and the 1950s is the solar regime. Given the place we're at right now in the decadal PDO, AMO, NAO cycle, we should be back in the mid 1950s. However, blocking in the 50s was not superb overall like others have mentioned - didn't really get going until the late 50s. The sunspot cycle and geomagnetic activity were reaching a peak for the 20th century in the 1950-1960 period, which IMO definitely prevented the blocking from becoming significant enough to produce consecutive snowy winters in the Northeast. Now, in contrast, we've entered the neg PDO phase, begun the downswing of the AMO, several years into the NAO phase like the mid 1950s, but solar activity has been at unprecedented levels, with virtually no geomag action to speak of since 2008. This undoubtedly has created an environment in the troposphere conducive to development of long duration -NAO/ west based blocks. How long this will continue is up for grabs, but we're already seeing evidence of the initiation of this winter's -NAO w/ the recent storm. Although minor, a pos height anomaly east of Hudson's bay magically appeared in time for the deepening short wave in the East. We've had an interesting run in the NY metro and many good years to come I think. Pretty soon NYC's 30-year avg snow will be back up at 28" where it should be, and I'd also expect this decade (2010-2020) to produce another 30"+ avg in NYC, potentially even snowier than the 2000s.My decadal average in CNJ for the 2000s was a little over 34", so I don't think it'll be that difficult for NYC to beat 31" and change from the 2000s. JBG
Great job as always. That shows why we perceive, correctly, certain periods to be snow droughts.
Isotherm
the 1960's did well considering it was the driest winter decade... Yeah Unc precip anomalies don't seem to be correlated much w/ snowfall in our area. We're much more reliant on temps being cold; I'd feel much safer with a winter of persistent cold than persistent precip. As one moves north, the zone for greater precip-snowfall correlation seems to be interior SNE up through NE. Northern Maine can torch all it wants, but a +12 departure and hvy precip in January still produces accum snow in the day!

Big cold, but little snow. January 1, 1971 was an exception but otherwise it was an unproductive winter.
