NEGa
I've asked the question before about if there is any correlation between a warm November and a cold winter (and vise versa). Some have said that the patterns become set in November so a cold November is what you want. But just from memory, it seems when we have a cold November the following winter is not that bad (and vise versa). It's kind of like a seesaw. We have three periods of winter (front, middle, end), and you want the seesaw to be down for the front, up in the middle (January thaw), and then back down again for the end. The seesaw it up now hopefully it can fall by the 1st of December. i think what people are referring to is more the pattern that sets up, instead of cold/warm. generally, you can get a pattern to lock in (pattern meaning general storm track, whether they are wet and overproduce, or end up drier and underperform. same with temps etc.). we get in a rut where its warm and dry in november, it could be a signal of the pending pattern for winter. likewise, we get a lot of storms then hopefully one will hit when the temps are low enough for some fun
tnweathernut
FWIW - I went golfing yesterday (absolutely beautiful day) and saw my first wooly worm of the year. Jet Black. First all black wooly worm I have seen in many years. He also scurried up and behind my car tire when i went to pick him up. So I am thinking an all black wooly worm with suicidal tendencies just HAS to mean a cold and snowy winter is approaching our doorstep. All hail the wooly worm. Wooly worm FTW. The SE crew is the absolute best, always has been and always will be. I owe a special thanks to Lookout, he has guided our ship for a long time, and done a fantastic job over the years. superjames1992
Did Talkweather shut down or something? I haven't been there in awhile and I just tried and it is not coming up. I guess it could just be down temporarily, but I am curious.

Really enjoy your posts, NC....Now you HAVE to stick around. No, Lookout is still a mod, still looking out for all of us, and busy preparing his cliff for another busy winter season. I think they just wanted another one on the SE side, and adding during an inactive period instead of full board meltdown, when all hell has been known to break loose. The ignore feature really helps keep my sanity on here some times.....found that it lowers the blood pressure too We ought to make a rule this year....only seasoned, experienced weenies get 1st dibs on the cliff....HAHA!!! Mr Bob
My wife and I are headed down to Sarasota (actually Osprey) for Christmas to visit my parents. We'll have to try it out! superjames1992
Good to hear Talkweather will be back up. I like AmericanWx, but I like Talkweather, too. And I like the NC Weather Forum. BTW, congratulations, WeathernNC! We've needed another mod in the Southeast Forum for quite some time. It's hard for Lookout to do it all himself when we mow through 100 pages per day during snowstorms.

Local Yokel Wx
For those who follow the slopes, Cataloochee may be the 1st of the season to have skiable conditions in NC. They released a statement via their FB page yesterday... "Ok...you've waited, and waited...patiently...SO, here it is! With the expected cold weather Thursday through Saturday of this week, we will begin snowmaking operations at the first opportunity with the hope of opening on SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 12, at 8:30am for skiing and snowboarding from midstation down. Please check back with us Friday evening after 5pm for an updated report....and GET READY!!!!! On a personal note I will make my first run at blowing snow for the season Friday and Saturday morning as temps dip below 27. Looking to make about 3 - 6" in a 30' x 30' spot. Of course pics will follow if we are successful. fingers crossed!

Local Yokel Wx
From Ski Country, they are alluding to Sugar Mtn possibly making snow this week as well. You gotta love the race to be 1st in NC for skiable conditions! Even though it melts days later they will still say they had it 1st if one person can ski down the hill. There has been some chatter that Sugar is aiming for tomorrow, but seems to be an inversion about to happen. Neither place has yet had temps at the base conducive to making snow, but we will see once the sun fully sets tonight. I will be at whichever place opens first and I'll make sure to post some pictures when I get back. Heading for the hills in the morning.
