Post Some Good Snow Pics From The 10/29/2011 Storm

Recommended Posts

Taken in the Frederick City Forest (watershed) about 10-15 miles NNW of Frederick, along Mountaindale Road (just for the Jeep stuck by tree across road picture - elev. estimated at about 1000 feet) and Gambrills State Park Rd. (elevation estimated at about 1400 feet) in the late afternoon on Saturday, October 29, 2011. My friend Rick Holden was along with me, and he took the snow measurement you can see in the one picture, and measured 5 inches. It was 32 degrees and still snowing lightly at the time, which was about 4 - 4:30 PM. I believe the snow had compacted some by the time we had gotten there to measure it, I would estimate their peak snow depth was closer to 8 inches earlier in the day. Gambrills State Park was probably about 5 miles south of the location of a majority of these pictures, at slightly lower elevation. The park road were took the pictures was gravel based and snow covered with ruts from car tires. There were a few spots along the road where we had to clear downed small trees and/or branches from the roadway so we could get by. The spot where the jeep was stuck was not possible to get by, the jeep owner tried to attach ropes to the tree and his bumper to pull the tree off the road, but failed to do so. Then he also failed in trying to drive over the tree with his jeep so he turned around as did I after he passed. Luckily Gambrills Park Rd was just a half of a mile or so down the road to use to get up into the deeper snow of the higher elevations of the forest. Hope you enjoy the pictures!

0.8" of snow in his backyard, 1.10" water equivalent total for storm (plenty of rain, drizzle, sleet along with the snow) :snowman:

Wow Allsnow. We would have been royaly fooked if we had leaves on the trees. Did you lose power?

Yeah for about 24 hrs....really could have been alot worse. Kind of happy the ccb did not crank over us.....the 5 we got in the middle of the day was enough. Congrats on the 30, pictures look great.

Wow. Did it start out as rain or was it, ehm, yeah I'm not even gonna.

Yeah we had rain for about 3 hours, then switch over around 11. About 7 hours earlier then any forecast had it. Alot of people out and about saying how it looks like a tornado went through. Either way you slice it, I will not forget this storm....very memorable event.
