Mini rant, the KFOR chase car reporter is killing me with assigning an EF rating to every tornado that spins up. This is forcing him to explain why a half mile wide multi-vortex tornado is not EF5 wind speed. How about we just say large, and extremely dangerous tornado on the ground northwest of Fort Cobb?

Yeah this drives me nuts too.. KWTV was way better.. watched them both for a while and it wasn't even close.

I'm not sure how it happened yet. Someone said his steering locked up.

But....Evan Bookbinder, an NWS met had this to say about Gabrielson

"iin the first 5 minutes I was in the office we watched him blow 3 stop signs and drive at some *very* unsafe speeds"

Just watched the video on TWC. Looks like he got too close, and had to back up. And then drove himself into a ditch, and rolled it. The thing is, when your steering locks up, it does not turn, like he said it did. He just said his wheel cut hard right, out of his hands on TWC. IMO he drove himself into the ditch, that's what overturned him.

I'm an advocate of not needing a high speed reverse to avoid a road-crossing tornado.

He just explained on TWC that somehow his car "didn't work right", sounds like he crashed the thing while he was having a fit over the tornado. Also, who the hell would keep chasing after totaling a car?

Didn't work right because I'm pretty sure the manufacturer didn't design that SUV to withstand the winds in the outer circulation of a tornado.

It's truly a shame that a large number of people will see this behavior and see confirmation that it is possible to survive such an incident, despite significant odds to the contrary.

Haha, gotcha.

That cell south of KFDR is somewhat interesting. Very isolated and still in a good environment. The tail-end charlie west of there looks pretty decent too.

Ya, hoping that cell down in TX gets its act together. It would be moving into very rural area, and would mean more live coverage from OKC.

Cantore praised him for continuing the chase. That really stoked my anger. When you watch his feed, you would think he was driving the TIV right into the tornado. He's way too aggressive and he's lucky he hasn't hurt himself or others.

the media loves to pimp the worst of the worst because they get good footage

Meh.. he probably just screwed up reversing on a muddy road. He didn't reverse to get away from the tornado, the editing on TWC is clearly cut to make it look like it happened as the tornado was crossing over in front of him. Maybe he caught a rut or slid on the muddy surface. It's likely just a case of bad driving or a momentary lapse of concentration rather than the tornado doing anything and he'll pay for that mistake with an expensive bill to repair the car. If I was in that position and someone stopped by and offered me the chance to continue the chase, hell yes! The car will still be there in the evening to collect with a tow truck and hopefully, the storms are passed at that point so some poor tow truck driver doesn't have to play dodge the supercell to get out to your vehicle! Looks like he got away with very little damage to the car anyway. A wing mirror gone, 1 side window and some new airbags required are probably the only required fixes to get it road legal again. Not sure how much repair his hail guard and antennae will require though but I think he got away lightly for a rollover!
