NJwinter23
What an amazing storm! Recorded just over 9 inches in the valley in hackettstown..trees down everywhere and schooleys Mtn is a winter wonderland. My road home is blocked by downed trees... Got half way up there tho and walked thru 10-12 inches of snow, in October ..can't believe it There were much hIgher totals around this hole in northwest nj but this was incredible to watch. Meanwhile At home in the low elevations of holmdel we got hardly any accum and apparently nothing left on the ground after the half to 1 inch of snow/sleet today (reports from my dad).meanwhile just down the road in higher spots south of me and away from the bay, it was snowing and sticking for much of the day with a couple of inches..amAzed at the 3 inch report from freehold.. It appears small bodies of water that usually have no affect on temps for locations in winter storms (such as the raritan bay and LI sound) Played a huge role since they were still warm. A north wind off the 60 degree raritan bay cooked my house pretty good durign the CCB precip while just down the road it was snowig and sticking. Glad I was in nw jersey for this one! If it wasn't accumulating on the board, then no addiitonal snow fell. If they measured 1.3" on the board this afternoon and didn't wipe it, and then at the next measurement it had compacted to less, then no snow fell. If the maximum depth was greater than 1.3", then the measurement would clearly be wrong, but I can see it being correct.

Cfa
A little less than a coating on the ground but that should change soon at this rate. We saw no snow at all on 10/29.
NorthShoreWx
But there are many locations nearby that are over 2" The same might be said for here and we got none. I'm not vouching for the measurement, but I can imagine relatively lighter snows there this afternoon not accumulating in the middle of Manhattan.. tmagan
I know this is nitpicking, but I saw TV people say that October nor'easters are rare. They are not. October coastal snows are rare.

BxEngine
There was a really cool localized effect by our reservoir here in rockland....there was a constant layer of fog over it during the day, and areas up to 50' or more away from the water barely accumulated, while a couple hundred feet away it measured equal to othere areas around town. Yeah folks at home in Colts Neck say we got at least 3". Given Colts Neck/Freehold are about 10-12 miles south of Raritan Bay compared to Holmdel only 3-5 miles from it, made a significant difference. Noticed on the Monmouth coast as well, temps there never really got below 38-40 during the storm even on a northerly wind. The 60 degree water couldn't be overcome by the hvy rates. Isotherm
Also wanted to take a moment to thank everybody who participated in the threads over the past several days. I can say with absolute certainty that this was the best storm I have ever tracked with this group in terms of post quality and information as well as forum organization. There were very literally no problems to deal with---it was just a ton of fun and a constant flow of information. This group is improving at a rapid pace and it's really, really awesome to watch. You guys did a terrific job and it was great tracking this thing with all of you, from the usual ups and downs to the moment the snow started falling. If today is any indication, it's going to be a sick winter. Collect all your tossed weenies from today. You'll need them again in a few weeks. Agreed. Awesome, historic event, hopefully more to come this winter.
snowlli
Took a ride around the north shore of Nassau tonight. Around an inch or so south of the expressway with snow only away from trees. Went up to harbor hill in Roslyn and it was a winter wonderland. Probably 4 inches on the ground and they had plowed the roads! I am talking less than a mile from my backyard! Trees were also down. From there I drove north to port Washington, expecting to see some more snow. WRONG! Along Hempstead harbor there was not even a dusting. I guess 60 degree water can kill snow for a couple of miles from the water. In the town of port I think here was less then central nassau. Definetly an interesting fall storm. Great to see the microclimates of the area.

isnice
Absolutely incredible for ALL of you. I am absolutely stunned by some of the pictures I've seen. I've been in a small Russian town since Wednesday without internet, so I wasn't able to see the models. I came back to Vladivostok just tonight and was awestruck by the news. Congratulations, you have seen more snow so far than we have in SIBERIA!
