Have you notified Upton yet about raising flood warnings?

KOKX radar has had radar estimates of near 3.00" of rain near KISP during the storm. I know the ground isn't as saturated as it recently was, but I thought we might see flooding reports on Long Island today.

Well, as it turns out, the measily 1.2" that fell from 18Z-0Z here in Ewing melted down to a whopping 0.55" liquid. 2:1 ratio. So its obviously falling but lots and lots of melting. Total for the day up through 0Z is 1.54" liquid for 3.0" of snow.

You should have ventured up to NW NJ. 16" here as of 9PM. ~ 1.5" in the heated rain gauge which is still probably catching up by a tenth or two. I know the heated gauge is not perfect but it usually gives a pretty decent representation of liquid.

Western Mass has surpassed 20" with heavy snow still coming down as posted in the new england thread. They have some elevation but wow.

that banding really helped them out. guess the models were not far off with LE precip totals of 1.5 to 2.0"!

IIRC, Peru (MA) is right near the 2000 foot elevation contour....making it the highest town in SNE...(CT, RI, and MA)

They made the assumption most of us made that if it was snowing at 1pm it had to be snowing still at 8pm, but what may have happened was the brief drop off in the precipitation caused a 1-2 degree warming of the 800-1000mn layer, in this setup, even in this sort of setup in January that can sometimes kill an entire storm because it tends to be quite hard to get that layer cooled back off...obviously in the case of a 980mb storm with a strong high to the north you can regenerate the previous conditions but its tough to here.

interesting post.

thx.
