Quincy
9.0 inches. still moderate to heavy snow. really hurts your face with the big flakes and gusting winds far east end of Danbury, near the Bethel town line. Reports of 11" on the west end of town across the higher elevations.

Guest Pamela
All snow now on N winds. Only about 1/2" of slush on the ground. That 70 foot elevation advantage of yours rears its ugly head....(240 / 170)....
SnowGoose69
One factor making it particularly difficult for LI...with water exposure and little elevation...is the lack of cold air to draw on...wind direction is fine...but it is 32 F at Albany and 32 F at Scranton (@ 980 feet a.s.l.)! I believe Ray said it....the source region of the NW winds may be a big problem here. The 12/5/03 storm we had a nasty dry air mass over New England which the NE winds were tapping into and bringing the cool and dry air down. This time the problem is its early in the year and the areas that were dry earlier today where we could pull 28-30 degree air from are now only 32 or so. The surface means nothing, trust me. It was snowing here at 41 earlier this morning, but all the mid levels were solidly cold
tmagan
can you explain for those of us in a fog.. You can see the warm layers (above freezing) at 8,000 ft. and the lowest 1,000 ft. of the atmosphere. Ideally you would like the whole layer from cloud base to surface below freezing to have snow, although there are exceptions. Even if the warm layer near the surface were gone we would still have sleet because of the warm layer at 8,000 ft.

RutgersWx92
Snow has temporarily picked back up with the last heavier band associated with the back end of the precip, but it's still not coming down nearly as heavily as one would expect with the kinds of returns the radar is showing. The flakes are big but there are few of them.
