Organizing Low
Those kids missed a week in Irene and will miss all week this week. Incredible video coming out now. Aerials should be unreal. they put up a side by side image of the power outages for irene and this storm appears the power grid was more affected in the eastern and SE portion of the state for irene.....how long were you out for? weatherMA
Best I could manage on WU by playing with the values in the URL. Cool! The ORH screwzone and how the mega band never really came through here is clear from that loop. I never thought I would complain at 9" in October lol. BTW, not much is melting today, with the temp at 35F at noon. Heavy Heavy freeze tonight.
CoastalWx
honestly it was just surreal. Usually we slowly ramp up of step down, if you prefer, to winter...and by the time the first significant storm comes we are more than ready for it. A part of me couldn't believe it would actually start to snow and pile up. When I woke up to almost a foot and a half I was kinda stupified. I'm actually glad it will melt this week (sorry Pete and others) and hopefully allow my kale and carrots to finish and then have a proper ramp up/step down. I suspect though, that we warm up for a week or two then have another snowfall before December. Have no idea what the long rangers say but that is just what it feels like will happen. I still have never had that feeling like I did on 4/1/97. The feeling I had watching pink lightning flash across the sky and cars being buried so late in the calendar year was surreal to say the least. grinch1989
Major transmission lines down, complete rebuild required in areas 12.5 inches Reading in between the lines from what the CLP rep just said, it will take longer to restore than irene. Lots more schools closing...
weatherMA
Matt, what'd you measure at 440'? I measured 8.6" but I went out an hour ago and got anywhere from 9-10.5 on the grass. I think those are inflated but I'm not sure, 8.6" could be underdoing it.

Ginx snewx
Wow Brian, that's awesome. Never fails....nw edge of a cyclone FTW. Why is it then when a storm is 100 miles more OTS I get flurries LOL
Brian5671
Dusting is just about gone thankfully! wow-big difference b/w north end of town and you guys--I'd say we had 4 inches at the peak before it started melting--2nd half the storm never really added much... weatherMA
Will has 17 inches, what screw zone would that be All dependent on elevation. I have 9", up 150' to the center of town has 11", up further in ORH has 13-15", Will and ORH airport have 16-17". Quite the gradient. The screw zone was E of ORH. There is a huge drop off in totals from west of ORH to just east.
CoastalWx
Why is it then when a storm is 100 miles more OTS I get flurries LOL This had a pretty big circulation...like the Feb '06 storm did. I mean look at what the 12/19/09 storm did to LI. It's all about banding. Either you get a monster CCB, or you need to get int that band. H7 had a back bent warm front which is classic for this type of result.

ELCwx
Reading in between the lines from what the CLP rep just said, it will take longer to restore than irene. Lots more schools closing... It's going to be tougher on people because you didn't need heat with Irene. Lows in the 20's tonight and 30's all week. Plus they probably were better prepared with out of state crews lined up then as well.

You were onto this quickly...great call! http://forecast.weather.gov/product.php?site=NWS&issuedby=OKX&product=PNS When I drove home last night coming East at sea level in blinding heavy snow and running into a mix at elevation it was the first time ever in my time up here that has occurred, usually complete opposite. What is really a problem is whole towns out and none close have power, gas, ATM, food, prescrips, etc etc etc. Bad as it gets in cold season. bobbutts
Was the first storm I've seen at this location and one of very few in NE that rivaled Tahoe snows with hours and hours of 2-3" rates. Amazing.. Feel like everyone contributing here was unusually ahead of the curve on this storm too. I never really expected 20"+, but was not surprised at all when we had hours of intense rates. Complete stunner for Joe Public that doesn't follow this stuff.

CoastalWx
Is Boston the only major city with a private person providing these readings which will stand in the record book? I have issues with this..... The person who used to measure was a met...a friend of mine living in Eastie. He is not there anymore, so I think they are using Winthrop since he is very close. I agree...I hope it does not cause climo problems.
