measured 8" here after a lot of compacting.... not sure what the actual amount is.

2.7" was the official tally here in Clarksburg. That was with me wiping the "board" (deck) 3 times. Not bad for October. I'd love to see what the total was on the top of Sugarloaf Mountain 10 miles away (and 500' higher).

I think the NAM had the upper level temp profile better on this (at least over the GFS), but it seems the near-surface temps were 3-4 degrees warmer than what the NAM was advertising. I probably had enough snow fall that it would have given me 1-2" had the surface temps gotten cold enough, but it never got below 35F here. Just didn't snow heavily enough to overcome that except for a brief 30-45min window. An extra 100-200' of elevation really made a critical difference (as we expected it might).

I just got back from a walk down my street. After looking at the snow in various neighbors yards it looks like 3+'inches here. I'm sure sugar loaf is close to 6"

Just drove back from :Lucketts and VDOT is out spreading salt on the bridges and overpasses and ramps. Whatever is on the ground, decks, etc is pretty solid frozen over now here. It will all be gone by tomorrow afternoon though.

Great storm and nice work by Zwyts with this system. Tough one to forecast with all the possibilities but he nailed it pretty good. nice work matt.

driving around its amazing how quickly snow amounts taper off in every direction as soon as you go down in elevation. Even Westminster about 8 miles and 250 feet lower has significantly less snow. I guess the elevation really helped a lot this time, even just 200 feet was a big difference.

Yes in some areas it was piling up while in others it was melting from the sun getting through the clouds.

For those who are Jealous, tommorrow we will all be seeing the later of the two. Probably nothing for anyone for the monday morning commute if not sooner.

It was fun to watch, but this snow is out of place. It's not normal to look out and see snow on the ground with colorful leaves still on the trees, ferns hanging on the front porch, mums still pretty in planters. I hope it all melts today. I'm hoping the next chance (and one of many) comes on Thanksgiving weekend.

At the risk of being too personal...

Oktoberfest party turned out great yesterday. Snow cleared out in time to fire up the grill, and the temps were the perfect natural refrigerator for the libations.

Started snowing at 1:30 pm yesterday and finally finished up at 5:30-6:00 or thereabouts. Ended up getting a dusting in some areas as the huge flakes came ripping down in mid-afternoon. I'm amazed at some of the totals for a storm on October 29 - pretty incredible. But I'm looking forward to a nice torch before we're really supposed to start seeing snow chances as winter arrives.

Lost my power last night for 5 hours. I guess the trace of snow was too much for BG&E to handle.

Pepco's recent tree work kept the lights on here. I've learned alot about dealing with no power the last few years. We camp alot and that gear comes in super handy.

Black cat catalytic heater works perfect indoors (and is totally safe). Coleman 2 burner stove cooks great. Dry ice keeps freezers cold for 2-3 days. Good sleeping bags are comfy even in the mid 20's. Cheap LED headlamp is great for just about a million reasons. Inverter for the car helps when you gotta run something AC. Having this stuff makes life pretty easy when the power goes out when it's freezing out.

You may be in for a long winter, Wes!

Gorgeous!

Bob-you don't need ventilation with that heater?

Highest report I could find was 27.8" in plainfield MA. Berkshire county was plastered with pretty much 20"+ everywhere.

This really was an impressive storm not matter what month but Oct pretty much puts it in the history books.

This sat pic clearly shows how important elevation was. Snow acc pretty much starts after the fall line and lines up perfectly with it. Notice the Frederick valley in MD. Not uncommon for Damascus up to Westminster to do well and then not much in the Fred valley.

If someone can find a high res color vis sat for the EC, please post it. Snow coverage will going to be huge and it's a photo I would like for my memory folder.

Not at all. That's what makes it so great. It's safe for indoors. You can't lock yourself in a closet and use it but it's fine in any open room of the house. Goes through one tank every 7 hours on high and 10 hours on low. Best 45 bucks I ever spent. We've used it camping when temps are in the low 30's. Keeps the tent pretty toasty.

Nice picture.Yes, you can clearly seen Pars Ridge from upper Moco into Pa.

Got a screen grab from http://goes.gsfc.nasa.gov/

You can go to the site to get a higher res. version.

Hey, thanks alot for this! Back in my faves and saved the big copy. So cool how you can see snow on the ridges of W NC. 5-6600' out that way. Bershires got pretty much plastered with this event.

So fun to track a threat in Oct and see the outcome. There were ALOT of spot on calls with this system. Best analysis I've seen since psu storm last year. Many thanks to the Mets and smart weenie input on this.

I have no worries if the SE ridge does materialize during the first half of Nov. We always have a warm spell in Nov and it's pleasant to get the last outdoors stuff in the books before the real distractions start in late Nov.
