I am just in disbelief - we have about 2" just NE of Germantown and it stuck to streets and sidewalks. I took a rake out to free low tree branches and shrubs of a thick coating of slush remembering the lawn damage we got in that we Jan storm last year. I remember the 10/10/79 event, which was about 2" as well, but it was mostly a burst early in the morning and it was done. This has produced periods of snow most of the day and I can't believe it's October!

I was thinking back, and as far as I remember, anytime we got an anomalous early accumulating snowfall (before mid-Dec), we generally had good winters that followed:

Calvert County:

Late Nov 1978 3 inch snow - monster winter in 79

Oct 79 freak event - good early snows in Dec/early Jan winter of '80

Nutty Veterans' Day storm '87 - good winter of 88 followed

Germantown:

Mid-Nov. 3" snow that stayed on ground for several days - followed by awesome winter of '96

Dec 5 snows that were followed by decent/good winters, lead by the superb 2010

why be disappointed? we got a real life snowstorm in October in the mid-Atlantic. I'm thrilled with 4" in my yard. it has been awesome tracking it all week and then seeing it happen. we easily could have been fringed back here on I-81 but instead we got to enjoy a beautiful snowfall.

I don't understand any complaining from anyone who saw snow today.

Exactly!!! Everyone needs to keep in mind that this was an historic event - accumulating snow in late October is an incredible rarity. I enjoyed today, realizing that this is something that we may never see again (October snowstorm).

I took some video from my phone...while I was driving. It will also be on FB but may cause motion sickness.

I also shot some video of my drive from the MD/VA border on Rt-340, to Harpers Ferry, that I plan on posting to YouTube later. It shows how quickly the conditions can change in that area, over a distance of just a couple of miles. Truly remarkable event today!

SN++++++++ here now

19 degrees

Whoops. j/k ha ha

Snow has picked off and dropped in intensity in the last half hour. This has been an awesome event. Nice way to kick off the wintry season ahead of us.

You need to redeem yourself after last years suckfest

I thought SN++ meant 1/4mi? Thats about what it is unless my interpretation of a mile is off. If you're near Seneca you're south of me by only 5 or 6 miles so difference shouldn't be too huge.

When heading northwest from D.C. towards Germantown (on the west side of I-270), the District's "heat island" ends just north of Gaithersburg and just south of Germantown. At night, there's an abrupt and very noticeable temperature drop as one crests a hill in the Seneca Creek area of Clopper Road. There is no recovery in temperature beyond that point.

I lived in Germantown (Red Robin Terrace, just off Great Seneca Highway) from '95 to '03 and saw way more snow than those down-county. My best friend, a lifelong resident of the District just recently moved to Germantown; I told him: "welcome to snow country!" It sure didn't take long, ha-ha!

Love the play-by-plays here of weather back in my old stomping grounds. Thank you all.
