What really sent Ivan's flooding over the top was it being preceded by the remnants of hurricane Frances delivering similar amounts less than a week prior. Fortunately we haven't been all that wet up to this point lately, but still.. that much rain around here would deliver big problems.

Thanks. I hadn't remembered Frances until you mentioned it.

Still, I'm also remembering that out here (Hopewell Twp.) Green Garden Plaza, (which is the strip mall down by the Aliquippa exit off 376), had about 7 feet of water in the Giant Eagle from Ivan, but in another storm (I think something more localized) a year or two earlier, it had flooded as well. Something on the order of a couple of feet. The point being, of course, that I concur that Sandy could still be pretty disruptive locally, if things play out anywhere near the scenarios that seem to currently be on the table.

And the GFS takes the low to Erie...I don't know what sfc temps are, but looking at it, it would be the most epic blizzard we have ever experienced....

Looks like that was just one off run for the GFS in terms of temperatures. It overdid the cold air for us with that run. It's last two runs have us back to a mostly rain event, which is what we're likely to see. If Sandy could track into New York instead, then we'd at least have a better shot at some snow. Looks like the mountains of WV and western Virginia have a good shot at getting some heavy snow as of now.

For now I think they predict the snow level to stay above 2,500 ft. It might be cold but at the surface, as far as I can tell right now, snow doesn't seem likely given the warm lower level. I guess it really depends just how deep the central pressure gets and how much cold air it can create. Even down here I'm not immediately concerned about snow, just a cold rain.

I'd put flooding as the first concern for us, then with the winds there will likely be some power outages which with the marginally cold temps will be a problem for folks if it lasts a couple days with no power.

I'm not sure the lower elevations would even see big snow given a "perfect track" so to speak with this one. It does suck to see all that qpf and know its rain!

I'm not sure this has been brought up yet or not, but I wonder if we can make a run at the all time lowest pressure for the area? The record lowest barometric pressure for Pittsburgh is 28.59" or 968mb set on 1/12/1964. The 18z GFS has the pressure at 956mb over central PA. It's hard to see all of the millibars but it looks like we'd be at 968mb at that point. When the low is practically on our doorstep it shows 966mb. Of course, this is all based on one run of the GFS which has changed a million times now. Anyway, I guess it's something to keep an eye on as the storm gets closer. I at least anticipate seeing my barometer go lower than it's ever gone before by far......as long as the storm tracks this way anyway.

It's been so quiet in here today! Tomorrow at this time we may be without power if we really see gusts up to 58 mph.... The ground is saturated and trees with leaves could easily cause a lot of problems.....

Looks like tomorrow evening into Tuesday morning we will see the worst of both rain and high winds. It is rare we get sustained winds in the 30-40mph range for such a long duration.

I've noticed that both the central PA thread and the western PA/Pit thread are at or over 1000 posts, what are thoughts on maybe making a new thread merging both regions for the storm?

Get the mods to close the threads, and start the new one...though, I am not well liked by many of the CPA posters due to my extreme anti-Paterno stance. Lol.

Maybe for the storm, but I think there's enough dis-similarity between the regions for it to be inappropriate for the upcoming winter season.

I agree for the storm only.

I still would like to have our own Pittsburgh/Western Pa. separate for the season.

Like Digger said, we are very dis-similar a lot of the time and there are many more posters in Central Pa. The Western Pa. posts would be lost in one big thread.

I could start a new Pittsburgh/Western Pa but someone would have to lock the old one.

Ok guys, was just curious of what you thought. I was only talking for this specific storm but hazelton already made up a new C-PA thread and I had like one response to this question over there... so we'll just keep em separate.

Feel free to continue stopping by our thread to interject your thoughts though as we always welcome some red tag analysis. smile.png
