CoraopolisWx
Well all is not lost without all the snow....shoveled the 1/2" snow off the ice in our driveway...about 1/2" ice....soooo I laced up the skates and shot some hockey in the driveway with my daughter! ... Lemons.........Lemonade Sorry you guys didn't get the snow. We knew it would probably split the county and it did. I ended up with 5 inches that I just had to shovel off the driveway. Almost took me an hour. Looking at the trees and pavements I ended up with no ice at all. Bad thing is I didn't get to see most of it fall. When I went to bed at 2:00 am I still had a light mix and maybe an fresh inch on the ground. The rest fell while I was sleeping. I just couldn't stay up. Pretty much the same here, obs mirrored the airports. That 925 mb line basically cut the county in half.

Thunderhead
KPIT received 0.44" liquid equivalent, so I'd say that the computer models did a good job with QPF. It does seem like the jackpot was along a west-east line from Hookstown to Aliquippa to Wexford to Indiana to Prince Gallitzin to Bellwood. The intense precip around 5 a.m. added a good bit to KPIT's total (about 2.2" additional snow to the 2.7" already reported at 3:57 a.m.) Considering how this winter is going for much of the country, Western PA snowlovers should be pretty happy right now

I now have a total of about 7 inches on the ground from these 2 events! Not bad considering how this winter has gone so far. The drive into Pittsburgh this monring was treacherous to say the least. We left about 6am and it took an hour and 15 minutes to do a drive that is usually about 25 mins to a half hour. Now Monday the high is near 45 with heavy rain. We got 3.5 inches out of both snow events for a total of 7 inches. I knew the all snow line was close, but I thought all of Aleg county got some sleet. Can't wait to see if we get a thunderstorm tomorrow with snow still on the ground. That does not happen very often.

I think our area was right on the line so probably every little bit further noth helped a lot. I ended up with just over 2 inches from the first event. I did several spot tests around the yard and had between 6.5 and 7 inches after the second event finished.
RitualOfTheTrout
Nice discussion from the NWS pertaining to the long range. To bad its for a lousy pattern lol. .LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/... - NO SIGNS OF ARCTIC AIR OR BIG STORMS - TEMPERATURES ROUGHLY FIVE DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL - MONITORING POTENTIAL FOR A WINTRY MIX THURSDAY MORNING LONG WAVE PATTERN ILLUSTRATES A NEGATIVE OR NEUTRAL PNA PATTERN PERSISTING...WHILE AO AND NAO ARE TRENDING LESS POSITIVE...BUT STILL ABOVE ZERO. THIS MEANS A CONTINUED STRETCH OF ZONAL FLOW OR SOUTHERN STREAM WEATHER SYSTEMS WITH NO ARCTIC INVASIONS OVER THE UPPER OHIO VALLEY. WITH A WARM FRONT LIFTING NORTH FROM THE OHIO VALLEY AROUND 12Z THUR...POTENTIAL EXISTS FOR A SHORT PERIOD OF A WINTRY MIX WITH H8 TEMPS BETWEEN 1C TO 3C. WE WILL WATCH THIS OVER THE COMING DAYS AND SEE IF CONFIDENCE IS HIGH ENOUGH FOR INCLUSION IN THE HAZARDOUS WEATHER OUTLOOK. IF THINGS ARE SLOWER THAN CURRENTLY PROJECTED...PTYPE WILL BE ALL RAIN DUE TO THE ARRIVAL OF WEATHER DURING THE WARMEST PART OF THE DAY. A LOT OF UNCERTAINTY EXISTS IN THE DAY 5 TO 7 TIME FRAME WITH THE PHASING OF THE NORTHERN AND SOUTHERN STREAMS...THUS INTENSITY AND TRACK OF SFC CYCLONES. PLAYED CHC POPS FOR THE TIME PERIOD. blackngoldrules
Well, this last storm was pretty lousy for me anyway, so might as well coninue the trend. Maybe we'll see something in February at some point where we can all get in on the act snow wise.

Digger
The thermodynamic properties of brick pavement make it hold onto the cold longer. You'll find ice on bricks much more often than on blacktop or concrete.

ChalkHillSnowNut
Earlier today I thought the European looked interesting and then I checked Weather.com forecast and it showed rain to snow sat night-Sunday.....looking now at the latest GFS run doesnt look like anything! O well I think things will start getting better for our snow chances in the next few weeks I think as the NAO is neutral and hopefully going negative... Nothing ever beats El Nino + -NAO/-AO, see '09-'10. That southern moisture conveyer belt feeding into cold air is where the money's at. We have been lucky the last couple years. We have not had a Winter this snowless and cold in a while and we were due. Noticed both the GFS and NAM are hinting at some back end snows tomorrow. May be only an inch or so but at least something. Also the little clipper system over the weekend keeps getting a little more QPF each run. May be looking at another inch or so over the weekend. Just enough to keep the ground white. Hey, at least it's better than the inch or rain we will get today and tonight.

I thought the same as you when I first looked at the graphical output of the models... but I just checked the text data from the 00z GFS and 12z NAM and they are showing both mainly rain. Maybe as we get closer it will be a bit colder than currently modeled for some light snow.
