Lots of black ice around the area tonight, very dangerous.

I encountered several bridges with ice on them on I-99 last night - that bridge in Tyrone was the worst. I was a little surprised, usually they leave enough salt to protect against the ice on the interstates.

The bridges were all treated this morning, so I guess they finally got to them. Hopefully no one cracked up their car.

I was at a Halloween party on Sandy Drive just off Science Park Road, and one of the people there actually fell on the street, she was okay.

We took I-99 back to Port Matilda because I didn't trust the old way up over Skytop. There were icy spots for sure.

Dammit. Wish the PSU game was at noon. Although they probably still would be in overtime given the way they played yesterday.

Most recent CTP reports: http://www.nws.noaa.gov/view/prodsByState.php?state=PA&prodtype=public#PNSCTP

Six inches on the ground right near me, more than what I had, although we must have got additional snow after I measured last because I measured 5.2 for the event on the snowboard at 1 am. That narrow band right over us helped.

Jeffery, NH, pulled 31". Amazing.

yeah i seen on the patriots board that someone got 30 inches in 9 hrs.

its not a weather forum so not sure how accurate but with the other reports from up that way.

quote from other board

"We have 30 inches that fell in 9 hours here in the hilltop Berkshires, Western MA....tongue.gif

yikes.png The Tyrone one would be a nasty one to come upon black ice. I hit some coming over the 8th St. bridge in Juniata last night. Besides treating during the storm i'm not sure if they did any pretreating with the brine water beforehand like they usually do. I'd imagine being the first event of the season the easy freezeover likely at least partially came from just the lack of any previous salting. It also just didn't seem to dry out very fast either, there was some patches of dense fog here and there as well. Just one of those nights you really had to be careful, and anyone unaware of the threat easily could've found themselves in trouble.

The question now is...When do we see our next snowstorm?

will we have to wait till december?

Yea next couple weeks look fairly tame for the most part. Looks like a more typical progression towards winter with some storms cutting up the middle of the country in the long range models. It seems like it could be setting the table for things to start getting cold by mid-late Nov, but for the time being longer range Euro/GFS look like they're centering the cold and storminess in the west. And thats fine with me, hopefully we dry out some. You don't really wanna see that cold pattern establish too early either. If mother nature weren't so off her rocker as of late I wouldn't have been expecting our first widespread synoptic snowfall and/or true winter cold until late November.

Woah, MDT jumped from 5" to 9.7". Heck yeah! I knew it was more than 5" ...

There had to been a snow bubble over me. lol Everyone all around us had all this snow, but not us. I would say 2-3", just enough to cover the grass.(who knows with melting and compaction) It really never laid on the driveway, walks or even the roads. But every direction around me got 6, 7 or more. Really Bizzarre actually. About 3 o'clock i think it was snowing harder then i have seen in some time, maybe even harder then the Blizzard in Feb 2010, but it only lasted for 20-30 minutes.

The pictures look awesome guys, thanks for sharing.. Truely an amazing storm to track and watch..

The mountain looked stunning yesterday morning. With all the leaves still on the trees, the way the snow accumulated on them, awesome.

Probably. Now till at least early Nov. looks no good. 50s and 60s straight through.

Yeah, reading stuff over the last few months had me mentally preparing for a first snowstorm mid-Nov on, not now. Everything I have been reading from the pros here seems to point at warm first half, cold second half for Nov. Which is actually how many of the great winters seem to start.

Down to 25.2° already with the full snowcover. Coldest October reading we've had here in a long time...could be the coldest since my parents moved here in 1984.

24.8 here. I don't think I can remember it getting to 25 in October. We picked up a friend to take to work in Park Forest this am, they have a lot of snow on the ground.

Jaime,

Have you talked to your brother? York County got rocked. I heard 40,000 people still without power. A co-worker told me his brother won't have power until Thursday, well thats what they told him anyhow!

Edit: Here is a link i just found on Pennlive http://www.pennlive.com/midstate/index.ssf/2011/10/octobers_storm_power_outages_t.html

He got four inches, not as much as some parts but he still lost power for a time Saturday night.

The NW part of the county got nearly a foot....a friend of his who lives near Ski Roundtop said most of his trees look like they were hit by a tornado.

Sitting at 27.5 deg currently. Going to be a cold walk to class.

I got the classic question from a person originally from a warm climate experiencing their first PA winter. Our Indian grad student asked me this am: "Is it always this cold this early in the year here?" She's a bit amazed by it all - first snow experience. I told her that she will discover snow can be different so the next one might not be as wet, and one of her friends told her that.

I saw her this am coming into the office and she was dressed like she was heading on a Yukon expedition laugh.gif

Yep, thats what i heard too.Much destruction.

When my daughter and i left our house Saturday around noon, we hardly had any accumulation. As we went into Camp Hill (about 5-6 miles from my house) it was amazing. Then when we got to the mall They had 3-4 inches on the parking lot of the Capitol City Mall, they were plowing and shoveling the walks.

Saw this on the NWS State College page...

HARRISBURG SNOWFALL UNDER REVIEW.

THE SNOWFALL MEASUREMENT FOR THE 29TH OF OCTOBER AT HARRISBURG INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT IS UNDER REVIEW. YESTERDAY EVENING...THE INITIAL 9.7 INCHES WAS REVISED DOWNWARD TO 5.5 INCHES. BUT THE MEASUREMENT DESERVES A MORE-THOROUGH REVIEW.

THE BEST POSSIBLE VALUE WILL BE DETERMINED THROUGH A CAREFUL REVIEW WHICH WILL INCLUDE THE NWS...FAA AND THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE CLIMATOLOGIST. WE APOLOGIZE FOR THE CONFUSION IN ISSUING TWO DIFFERENT VALUES. WE DO WANT TO HAVE THE MOST ACCURATE MEASUREMENT POSSIBLE FOR THIS RECORD EVENT.

There were definitely some odd variations in snow amounts with this storm. I drove from New Brunswick, NJ to Lebanon, PA yesterday afternoon. Along the way on I-78, the amount of snow on the ground varied from 10"+ along the highest ridges of western NJ, down to almost nothing along Rt. 61 in Berks County near Cabela's. Most areas seemed to have 3-6" still on the ground, including here at home in Myerstown.

Our low was 22.3° this morning, definitely the coldest October reading we've ever seen here.

Well it did jump from 5.5" to 9.7" overnight so something could be up. I'll adjust my sug as news develops. :)

... but how is this scenario possible? And how is it investigated?

Ask the guy if he stuck the ruler in upside down?

Uh oh - this reminds me of the Central Park measurement fiasco during the 2006 blizzard. That was an epic EasternUSWx flame war, lol, as people argued over whether it was right or not.
