Thanks Wes. Seems like a long time ago but also yesterday at times. I stayed for 7 seasons and averaged about 100 ski days each. I dedicated my 20's to being a ski bum and don't regret it a bit. My favorite part was the backcountry. Learned from some great backcountry skiers. We were safe with beacons and avalanche gear but looking back I was probably lucky to never end up in the hospital or worse.

Colorado is a really free spirited state and I loved it there. You could pretty much do whatever you wanted in the backcountry with no questions asked. I hope I'm lucky enough to go back for a while after I retire.

I was never good enough to do back country skiing though I did go to Aspen 3 different years for a week. I have a friend who did do that and in here late 40s blew out a knee. She now has a cadaver ligament.

Not much weather to banter about. I've been driving by this tree near my house for about 7 years. I've slowed down and looked 100's of times trying to figure out how a tree can actually grow like this. It baffles me. All three trees growing out of the trunk exceed 50'. You would think it would be easy to come down in a storm but it totally survived the July 2010 severe storm that wrecked my neighborhood (this tree is pretty much at the top of the aspen hill neighborhood). I live down low near a stream valley and the 2010 storm wrecked my backyard and topped 2 60' tall tulip poplars.

Does anyknow know alot about trees and how a tree can grow like this??

I'm going to post this in OT too because I'm really curious.

This is the third weekend in a row that we were able to get out and do a long hike. We did Old Rag on Christmas Day, Catoctin mountains last week, and today, stayed local at Patapsco State Park. Each hike had progressively better weather, and although today was incredible as we were able to hike in shorts, it's time for some cold and snow. This looks unnatural for January.

The tree was likely snapped off in a storm long ago..those def appear to be sucker shoots that grow when a tree has lost a significant portion of it's body to compensate for receptive ability.

Tulip poplars grow those things all over when they lose a sizable limb or more.

This is just one of those years boys and girls where you have to pretend like you are a kid and never watch the news or read the paper or get on the internet....everyday you wake up you look outside...that's the weather....maybe one day you wake and bang it's snowing...but if it's not...no biggie because you weren't expecting it or hoping for it anyway. Watching and hoping for the models to love us this year is certainly an exercise in futility...whenever someone thinks the worm is turning someone else comes along and says no...frustration abound if you let it...my mantra moving forward is...SURPRISE ME

Probably a good way to look at it for some on this board. While I will admit some frustration when we endure a stretch or even a winter such as this I do find that part of the enjoyment for me is not only the snow but the following of the models. To me it is interesting to see how they change from run to run and from model to model and the reasons for these changes whether through bias or through large and small scale pattern changes.

Yea, bring back the good old days when we really had no clue if it was going to snow. BTW, Jan 17-20 time period (or thereabouts) looks interesting on the 6z GFS.

What is strange to me is that even though we haven't gone through any change to colder yet...still remains to be seen how cold I guess....there are quite a few who seem to be looking past that change and are worrying or anticipating a change back to crappy...I understand I suppose but It just seems to me that is not allowing themselves to potentially enjoy any positive weather assuming it occurs....I also think it is funny when these same people don't see that as being pessimistic or negative...they call it realistic....one can be all three IMO.

I think some individuals just enjoy being miserable and are constantly looking for reasons to achieve that. I have no problems with that if kept to oneself but I find it annoying that some feel that they must spread that same miserable feeling to all the others on the board. The constant attacks by these individuals on those that have any positive things to say as well as the constant barrage of negativity gets tiresome at best. I have been following this board since 96 through all it's many transitions and I can honestly say I feel the last year or 2 have been the worst for this.

My only point i suppose is to enjoy the moment...no harm or intentional digs were meant by my post. The knowledge that some have here is quite impressive...we all have delivery opportunities i think as well as how we receive info. Happy Sunday!

Please move to banter thread sorry...put in wrong one

Agreed, move them to the banter thread. Not on topic here, but these posts are dead on. Good stuff, guys.

That's whey i've decided not to post my ideas here but to keep them in my own thread then those that want to read them can and those who want cheer leading can keep their enthusiasm here without having me impede it.

Wes let me give you this analogy, you are a Dallas Cowboy cheerleader and everyone else is a Ravens cheerleader. Who would almost everyone rather watch of course the Cowboy cheerleader, that is why even if the truth hurts i will wait for you to start cheering to know it is time to start watching the game closely.

Alright ladies and gents, a legit Nina question. SOI values seem to be plummeting into the negative range. Isn't -16 more of a Nino value, or do these values tend to fluctuate wildly on a week to week basis? Please help educate a Nina/Nino idiot here.

It means the GWO is probably in phase 7 or 8. I doubt it stays that way thru the winter.

So, this? - "Phase 7 (El-Nino like) – the global relative AAM anomaly is positive. Westerly wind anomalies move into the Eastern Hemisphere, broaden in latitudinal extent and link up with deep westerly flow anomalies over the mid-latitude Western Hemisphere. An extended Pacific Ocean jet stream and southward shifted storm track is observed, favoring high impact weather events along the USA west coast."

And are you inferring that this won't last long?

Patapsco St Pk is a really beautiful park. I've done a bit of hiking there myself. I really love the disc golf course @ the McKeldin area too. I was out running the dog in the woods yesterday in shorts and a t and I was sweating like it was summer. Yesterday qualifies as a serious torch. lol

Have you spent much time hiking around Gunpowder falls? I want to go there this spring when the water is running high and get some pics. Are there good trails to hike? It's a bit over an hour drive for me so if it's average or below average I'll take a pass.

Daily values can be quite variable. From the Aussies:

http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/glossary/soi.shtml

Daily or weekly values of the SOI do not convey much in the way of useful information about the current state of the climate, and accordingly the Bureau of Meteorology does not issue them. Daily values in particular can fluctuate markedly because of daily weather patterns, and should not be used for climate purposes.

I'm inferring that usually the GWO has cycles sort of like the MJO so we probably will not stay in phase 7.

It's funny that you responded to my post because as I was hiking yesterday, I was looking for trees like the one you asked about. The answer in OT was an accurate possibility because I saw several young trees that had been bent over with perpendicular, upright growth from the main stem. I took a few pictures but being in the woods, it was tough to discern one tree from another, so I deleted them before getting home.

As far as Gunpowder Falls, I've done some limited kayaking and canoeing there, but not hiking. I'll make it a point to get out there soon and report back to you. If you get a free day one weekend and are interested in exploring it with me, my girlfriend, and a few of our cronies, let me know. It's usually a good time that always ends up in a tavern tossing back a couple.

Also, here's a site that you may not know about. If you're a map geek like me, you might want to spend a few bucks and check out a few.

By the way, the Burpee catalog came in the mail and the Park's is on the way, so it must be getting close to starting the peppers!

That is really a wild looking tree. I need to take a portait photo so people can see how damn tall the 3 "shoots" are. It's gotta be 50+ years old so if it was going to come down, the last 10 years should have done it. The last decade seems to be a weak tree clearinghouse with the weather we've had around here.

New hiking territory + new friends + cold beer = win

I always bring the dog with me. He's a rockstar off the leash in the woods. I would think the gp area is tolerant to dogs off the leash. Looks like plenty of room to roam.

I had an ok hot pepper harvest last year but my tomatoes fed more squirrels and birds than my family. I just can't seem to get the yeilds I used to since the 2006 season. My greenthumb has become a bit tarnished.

prob a twin that one lead broke off of early on in its life.

then the fallen lead was cut off (notice the wound scar on the lower right...the bulging of the bark where it covered the wound), the break-point wound healed, and suckers grew out of the broken lead. also notice the younger bark on the center and RH lead, lending more to that theory. twins are notoriously weak but healed wounds are very tough sometimes.

educated guess, but i'm no pro tree man.

edit: or maybe not after looking at it again but thanks for posting.
