it's the same up here in Toronto. I wonder if it's a sign about the upcoming winter. Maybe it'll start late and end late?

Still have a handful of trees with colorful leaves left here, though definitely way more bare trees than ones with leaves. Well, a wise heat miser recently said that if the trees go bare early, it will be a mild winter, if leaves hang to the trees late, it will be a harsh winter. Now, granted this was said several weeks back when it looked like an early leaf drop would be had in the midwest, but weve since experienced this weird Fall where the first "round" got started quickly and the trees lost leaves quick, but the second round came later and some leaves still exist over a week into November. However I assume the old wives tale holds the same merit now as it did weeks ago, so we better be seeing an about face in his outlook, changed to a cold, snowy winter.

A little blurb from the overnight IND AFD. Would be nice...

FOR THURSDAY COLD ADVECTION CONTINUES...AS THE UPPER TROUGH AXIS

MOVES ACROSS. THIS WILL ALLOW CLOUDS TO DEVELOP...ESPECIALLY

ACROSS THE NORTH. GFS SEEMS VERY KEEN ON PLACING A FEW

SHOWERS/SPRINKLES AND *POSSIBLY* SOME FLURRIES ACROSS THE

NORTHERN COUNTIES...WHILE THE REST OF THE GUIDANCE IS DRY. KEPT

FORECAST DRY FOR NOW...BUT THIS BEARS WATCHING AS SOME PRECIP

COULD WORK IT/S WAY FARTHER SOUTHWARD THAN WHAT THE REST OF THE

GUIDANCE HAS BEEN INDICATING.

Not anymore. Front went through, expect winds to pick up temps to fall like a Rock.

Last Night was unbelievably Mild. Left the house for a few around 8pm it said 65 in my truck.sizzle.gif

Yea it crazy warm at night. BBQ'd a few steaks. Little OT but wow at some of the video from Nome Alaska last night. Serious blizzard conditions.

Rinse,lather and repeat.

Looks like a warm storm at this point so maybe not much snow potential but the storm/severe potential could be interesting. Doesn't look like the Gulf will be scoured in advance and GFS/Euro are advertising very strong wind fields...in fact both have the barb of death on the 12z run. Still a long way out and we know how that goes.

DTX did a little blurb; average dates of first measurable snowfalls in SE MI

http://www.crh.noaa.gov/news/display_cmsstory.php?wfo=dtx&storyid=75010&source=0

For Detroit:

AVG first 0.1"+...November 17th

Earliest first 0.1"+...October 12, 2006 (0.2")

Latest first 0.1"+...December 29, 1998 (0.1")

AVG first 1.0"+...November 30th

Earliest first 1.0"+...October 19, 1989 (2.7")

Latest first 1.0"+...February 17, 1919 (1.8")

AVG first 3.0"+...December 26th

Earliest first 3.0"+...November 2, 1966 (4.7")

Latest first 3.0"+...there have been a few winters with no 3"+ snowfalls

1974-75 winter was a bust overall in these parts. December 1974 was a torch.

December 1974 was Detroits 2nd snowiest month on record with 34.9" of snow! Started off with the monster 19.3" snowstorm, and the snows (many of them wet) continued through the month. It was a gray month with little temperature fluctuation (max 42F, min 6F) and naturally constant snowcover.

Interesting. take a look at December 1974 in Toronto and Ottawa. Torch!

Toronto: http://www.climate.w...74&Month=12=

Ottawa: http://www.climate.w...&Month=12&Day=1

Now take a look at January 1975 in both cities:

Toronto: http://www.climate.w...5&Month=1&Day=1

Ottawa: http://www.climate.w...5&Month=1&Day=1

I could honestly do without a winter like 1974-75

I'd prefer one like 1917-1918, which is about as likely to happen as i am to set foot on the moon tomorrow.
