salbers
Greetings, I could see some volcanic ash clouds in the sky about 30min before sunset yesterday, and some glowing pink colors characteristic of volcanic sunsets about 30min after sunset. Have there been any large volcanoes recently, or even a small one upstream of the western U.S.? Steve

Steve I just did a search on google news and didn't see anything about a fresh eruption - could you have seen the plume from a wildfire? Many of those are large enough to be visible from space. Steve You're correct, ash from major eruptions can stay aloft for years in some cases - but it spreads out and doesn't remain confined in a plume or distinct clouds. Can you give us a link to an eruption that would only now be visible from the western US? Thanks,

I agree that it likely may be smoke related.
okie333
Grimsvotn maybe, or possibly Nabro, both were stratospheric
salbers
Maybe it would be one of those two volcanoes, or Shiveluch if it rose any higher than was reported. I saw this to some extent again last night. Since these colors show up so long after sunset it seems to be stratospheric, above the level or forest fire smoke plumes. Since the colors were only "moderate" in intensity, and started to appear recently, we might be looking at a smaller more recent eruption. The new NPOESS satellite just launched might give us some good data on this type of aerosol enhancement?
