All Blend

I have seen several mets refer to the "All Blend" in their long term discos recently. Could someone please explain to me what this is? I just assume that it is a combination of data output from various models. If this is the case, I am curious as to what data from what models are included. If not, where is the data derived for the "All Blend"? Thanks in advance for any info.

AllBlend uses a combination of 50% of the previous official forecast blended with 50% of what's called ConsAll, which is a model consensus product produced internally and distributed in AWIPS. It's intended to free up the workload of the long-range forecaster by loading a standard product into the Graphical Forecast Editor of all the regional offices. Less time is spent hashing out CWA boundary details with neighboring offices for the entire forecast period, which frees the forecaster to focus only on the high impact events. If no high impact events are expected, most offices will likely just load the AllBlend and that's your forecast.

Thank you very much. Now I just need to investigate further into how the ConsAll is derived.

Interesting. Thanks for sharing. :)

No problem. I'm sure this will change with time. Personally, I am hoping they give more weight to the Euro and not allow the DGEX to be any part of the equation. It is a new forecast process for us and I have to admit that I'm not too thrilled with it. Also...a similar type of philosophy will likely be installed for the short term period as well sometime in the near future. In my opinion, I don't know why they don't just use a smoothing technique on NDFD borders and still allow the user to click on the cwa for more detail. Having all of the global lower resolution models as part of the equation for lake effect is going to be a nightmare. And why spend a lot of time as a forecaster making edits if you know that 50 percent of it is going to be wiped away by the next forecaster. This will be interesting...

I have to say I was surprised to see the DGEX given equal weighting as the GFS...or really any at all. But yeah, I can see where it could be a pain. Good luck.
