skierinvermont
Since the 2004-05 season, I've averaged 32.5 inches in Old Lyme (about 2 miles from the Sound), but of course that is skewed by the 59.4 inches in the great 2004-05 season. Groton also averaged 29.2" over that period, but they are missing all of winter 05-06, March 05, March '10, and December '09. Half the missing months fall in the last 6 years... the data is much more complete before that although that says nothing for measurement problems. snowman21
Groton also averaged 29.2" over that period, but they are missing all of winter 05-06, March 05, March '10, and December '09. Half the missing months fall in the last 6 years... the data is much more complete before that although that says nothing for measurement problems. That's pretty close to my average despite the missing data and being 20 miles west. March '05 had a lot of nickel and dime events, but they added up to nearly 10 inches. March '10 there was basically no snow, so no loss there, and winter 05-06 was pretty average if not slightly below normal. As far as measurement problems, I think a lot of the co-op observers are pretty dedicated. You'd have to be to do it in the first place I would think. I know the guy that does BDR's snowfall seems to be on top of it during events as you frequently see his totals updated on the PNS reports. I've looked at some of the old Hartford handwritten co-op forms that haven't been digitized, and even back in the 1890s the observers were good about noting the start and end times of precipitation, types of weather that day, wind direction and speed three times daily, and other atmospheric phenomena beyond just daily highs and lows. You even see where they would measure precipitation multiple times per day and at least attempt to keep good calendar day records. Pretty neat that you can go and look at the original forms that far back. I could see some of the co-ops nowadays that are at waste treatment plants and commercial places where they probably aren't very careful and measurements are made by multiple people that don't have much interest, but if it's something in a residential setting, I'd imagine you have to be committed to accurate record keeping to even bother volunteering. ORH_wxman
Hmmm..was that a strong Nina? No, it was a low end moderate Nina. It was actually only one of two terrible Ninas here during that cold phase of the PAC...the other being '73-'74. All the rest were at or above avg for snow. free_man
Talk of lowest record snowfalls seasonally for ORH and its possibilities in late December near X-Mas of a winter? That can't be a good thing.

Well maybe being pretty far below average is more realistic. Something in the 30-35" range? We'll see...maybe January will get us into a gradient pattern. '06-'07 had 5" on the season on February 1st and finished with 49.7" officially. It can change quick with a good month. Heck, if this storm hits eastern half of SNE pretty hard we get 8-10" out of it, then its really not that strange of a December...a tad light maybe. I mean, if it is warm in January and February, you guys can still do well in the snowfall department during the interwoven cold periods. Below normal obviously doesn't equal snow (look at this month).

Ginx snewx
This Nina isn't even playing by the rules right now anyway...so I think analogs will be tough to use. Its also still relatively early in this month. If we get a 10" snowstorm at some point in the next 3 weeks, then we can throw out all the bad December stats. cpickett79
it's very very important LOL i wish i tried harder to take a measurement today but the parts that i drove by on way in were on the top of a hill and blown to bits. i'm gonna walk the dog in a protected area and see what i can get. keeping in mind there was over an inch of wetter snow at the bottom. my best guess is 8-12. let's see.
