NortheastPAWx
The flat out insanity that was Feb. 13/14 2007...what I remember was being upset about that winter until this storm. 13" of snow along with 4" of sleet that remained on the ground in some form until late March. Chris L
Great Thread. December 30 2000 is a benchmark storm for the amount of snow fell in a short time. About 16 to 18 inches fell here. Randolph, NJ got 27 inches of snow in 12-14 hours. Morristown got 18-20 inches. THe entire region of Sussex County got as much as 25 inches of snow. Somerset County also got hit pretty hard with some totals piling up 22 inches of snow. In all, simliar to Feb 25-2 2010 and February 11-12, 2006 for intense snow rates. Somerset County Snow Totals. BASKING RIDGE (SOMERSET COUNTY) 22 INCHES BELLE MEADE (SOMERSET COUNTY) 14.5 INCHES BOUND BROOK (SOMERSET COUNTY) 19 INCHES BRIDGEWATER (SOMERSET COUNTY) 18.3 INCHES HILLSBOROUGH (SOMERSET COUNTY) 15 INCHES NORTH PLAINFIELD (SOMERSET COUNTY) 12 INCHES RARITAN (SOMERSET COUNTY) 13.5 INCHES SOMERSET (SOMERSET COUNTY) 16 INCHES SOMERVILLE (SOMERSET COUNTY) 17.5 INCHES

I am almost certain that under the NE.weather postings which are available on google still that someone posted the 1996 discussion for Upton before the blizzard...usually I can find those ne.weather postings by typing in my old username into google....I remember their discussion before the 12/30/00 storm the afternoon prior and it was rather tame...I believe something along the lines of "Not much change, still looking at 8-12"+ for most of the area"

jm1220
Best part of 96 was watching the snow total forecasts INCREASE throughout the day as it became clear the storm was coming North. Most forecasts for NYC two days before were that the storm would hit maybe up to Philly but graze us with light snow. It was really the day before when the mammoth accumulations started being predicted, seemingly out of nowhere. And they still weren't what actually fell. No one predicted the 30"+ over eastern New Jersey.

No one predicted the 30"+ over eastern New Jersey. We probably won't see that again in today's world, where they would increase the totals hour by hour... Highest total in Jersey was 32 inches in Edison and Elizabeth. Linden and Roselle got 30". I really believe February 5-6th 2010 (had it been our friend) would have beaten January 1996 in terms of snow fall totals. It only missed Philly's total by 2 inches. Some of the totals in Maryland were beyond belief. 32-36" in Howard County etc.
Chris L
Dude if Feb 25th-26th was a cold storm we would have had 3 feet of snow. We had over 3 inches of precipitation. Although then you wonder would it have been as juicy if it was indeed colder from the start. Well, the colder air would have made better ratios.... They did this with the Feb 11-12 2006 storm. A lot of forecasts the day before the storm had 6-12 inches of snow for the area. Well, the colder air would have made better ratios.... Man, I really thought we would of passed the blizzard of 96's accumulations. Stupid cool air.

I can't even imagine what 30"+ would have been like.

NJwinter23
This.....never have i seen it snow at those temp in this area....and to get that snow from a clipper and fight the dry area was impressive...... Kttn was 9 degrees and snowing for a time kdyl was 8 degrees and snowing for a time kewr was 8 degrees and snowing for a time klga was 9 degrees and snowing for a time kteb was 7 degrees and snowing for a time Snow started in LGA with a temp of 14 Loved that clipper. Measured 7" in Holmdel with that one and temps never rose out of the mid-teens. Nice day off from school, and I was reeling in the dough speed shoveling powder off driveways lol. Voyager
Taken at the height of the 2/10/10 snowstorm which brought Tamaqua it's largest snowfall of the season at 19 inches. This was PA309 southbound through town. Note how much snow was on the traveled portion of the road at the time.
Voyager
no one has mentioned this yet, but you gotta like December 25 2002 with the surprise snowfall rates after the rain That storm caused a LOT of problems in this area. While lower elevations changed to rain during the overnight hours 12/24-25, elevations over 1,000ft never got above freezing and had a long duration ice event before the changeover back to snow. Add 12+ inches of heavy, wet snow on top of about 3/4 inch of ice and you have disaster written all over it. Some areas north of me by a few miles were without power for nearly a week. phlwx
This says it all after the 2/9-10 storm....we had 40" of snow that had fallen in five days here and the snowbank outside of my condo (we have a patio that I shovel off) was just about 4 1/2' high...the shovel was leaning against it and from end to end it's 5' high. Had I thought about it at the time I would have used measuring tape and held it from end to end. Feel for you NYC'ers who missed out on 2/

The next morning NYC was talking about having up to 2' of snow. I believe if you type in Ray's Winter Storm Archives on the internet you can get the discussion for Upton prior to the blizzard. That was by far the most intense winter storm I have seen in my lifetime. It began at 5AM Sunday morning at 9F.

The Day 7 ECMWF 168 hour depiction valid 00Z that Sunday evening verified almost exactly...a 988mb low off Delaware, but thereafter I think it was running inconsistent and the AVN at the time and ETA did not catch on til within a couple of days before the event...it was definitely apparent by Friday there was going to be a storm, but at that point it looked like maybe a 6 inch event for NYC...the Sat AM forecast was 6-12 inches...by the afternoon though that went to 12-24..I think the 12Z runs Saturday morning were the first to really catch on...similar to the 12/19 event last year. Didn't blizzard of '96 have 3 straight days of at least 5"?. I think it started Sunday morning and we received 15-20" that day. Then After midnight into Monday the rest, 5"-10". Then the ULL came thru on Tuesday and dropped 3"-6". I'm going off memory. Thanks for the info in advance.
