New radar app for Android

Recommended Posts

Been a little while since I posted an update for V2, so here goes. Product cleanup/polish has been going pretty well. I am working on SRM so that the proper color table (palette) shows up. The program was originally written for the 256 level products, so there is just some engineering that has to be done to get the old 4 bit products to display properly. I have begun work on the Favorites list for the radar and that's about half done. The final bit was unplanned for V2, but is a requirement due to the number of mobile devices that do not support the OpenGL PointSize parameter (thus all cities, spotter network locations, user defined locations) will all show up as single pixels. Hard to see = hard to use. Hopefully that won't take long. At that point, it goes to the beta team and then distributed to everyone.

Looks like the wait was well worth it! Thanks for all your work on this, Joe.

I think this release essentially has every feature I ever imagined I'd want in a mobile app, save for one minor quibble. The ability to toggle looping is great, but I'd actually rather have back/forward buttons to progress manually through the old volume scans than the auto-looping. My first instinct is that this would be trivial to implement, but I know better than to assume so, given all the difficulties you've described programming for Android. If there's any way it can be done, though, that would probably the only item remaining on my wishlist for the next release. (Well, 8-bit SRV derived from combining the 8-bit V and 4-bit storm motion estimate would be awesome, but I imagine that might push some devices beyond their limit computationally)

Anyway, A+ upgrade here, and I'd advise any Droid users who skipped on the first version to jump all over it now for only $6.

Joe - Thank you for doing this project. Based on the feedback here and on the Android Market, I purchased your app today. Since it is a specialty app, paying $7.99 was not an issue .

I have a Thunder Bolt and it seemed to download and run OK for the most part. But it is not glitch free. Every time it asks me to accept the terms and conditions of the license, even after reboot. I also noted that the program was not stable until after an initial reboot, which is not a big deal. But I love the gesture area and the report generator. Might be nice to label the gesture pad area, because at first I did not understand where it was located.

I, for one, am glad Google is trying to standardize the Android system. (The current state of Droid OS reminds me of the 1800s when each city had its own time zone and the railroads tried to create schedules to accommodate the many differences.) Too many handset with different modifications makes it more challenging for developers and it causes a percentage of apps to just plain not work on any given handset....although the phone to own now seems to be the Droid X, as it has been a top seller since release. The TBolt, plainly put, is just not as stable and as a 1st gen 4G device, it is by definition a more difficult phone to own if you are expecting simplicity.

One final issue - and it is an important one - I need some education on the uses of the different radar settings and how to interpret them. Presumably there is a reference tool that can assist. Any links you can share?

Thanks!

Hi and thanks for your note. The Thunderbolt and MyTouch 4G seem to have the most trouble out there right now with rendering speed and that seems to only be limited to a select set of those devices. I'm suspecting that there may be some updates that are required on the device.

Unfortunately, the terms and conditions acceptance is design intent and needs to stay that way. I think the gesture pad confusion can be alleviated with an updated tutorial, which I plan to write as soon as time allows.

Now, regarding the radar settings, are you meaning specific to this program or radar in general? If it is specific to the program, that goes along with the updated tutorial. If radar, in general, I can point you to a few sites.

Ok hello all, first post but should be in and out of the forums...I have an Android powered HTC Magic Slide, was wondering if there is a free app that is pretty good with my device for free or at a lower cost.

I am very short of money but have a morbid fear of severe weather and right now I'm just using the Accu Weathers radar off the reg browser, but it does not move which does me no good at times when I'm stuck at work or out.

Any suggestions? Is this six dollar app work well enough to justify the cost (no offense to the devloper)? Ill try to squeeze in this purchase if it does...

Thanks.

FWIW I haven't had any issues on my ThunderBolt. The slow rendering I have chalked up to the network. I seem to have some issues with dropping into 1X lately. Not sure if its due to my root, or because they are rolling 4G out in Indy right now. How often does SN update my position? I know its not labeled, but it looked like I was about 10min behind my true position on a practice go with it on Sunday. While I can't say I would use it as my primary source, I know thats not what it is designed for either.

Once VZW has the 4G build out finished, and faster phones produced, maybe we could see some more products coming our way? PYKL2? :D

Is there any way to prevent the app from downloading new data only while it's running in the background?

Yesterday, it ended up grabbing gobs of data and using up a good chunk of my monthly allocation after I switched out of the app and put my phone away. So today, I read the transition document more carefully, and I see that you have to manually deselect everything in the Download Chooser to prevent this from happening. But when I do that, it won't even download new scans while the app is active, which isn't the behavior I want either. Maybe it's not possible to get the exact behavior I want, but I figured it was worth asking.

Currently, the answer is no unless you be sure to "quit" when you're finished viewing. User feedback was overwhelmingly in support of making sure things, such as radar acquisition, and spotter network reports continued in the background. Now, that said, I certainly see value in such an option and have included it in the feature queue on pykl3radar.com. I sympathize with your download consumption issue and if I can answer any questions at all about how things work, please feel free to email me at pykl3radar.com Incidently, there is no way to turn off base reflectivity (it's forced on all the time)

UPDATE: I had a few minutes to add this and you'll be seeing it in the next release (anything higher than 2.02). Thanks for the suggestion. You may want to watch it carefully to make sure it does what it is supposed to do. I can test things, but the users always find ways to break things!

Best regards,

Joe

My apologies, I was strolling through the forum and saw that I had missed your question. The SN updates are sent out every two minutes with either a network or GPS based position depending on which you select. The Spotter network positions are grabbed every two minutes as well. This is the minimum recommended time for SN. In actuality, based on the timing of things internal to the program, it's probably every two minutes and five seconds, but really, that's nothing.

If you're not interested in interpreting radar data in all three moments (Reflectivity, Velocity, and Spectrum Width) , then there are probably other apps which would probably suit your needs at less or little cost. This app is really intended for more serious users of radar data. While a casual user can certainly make use of the program, it does much more than an average who wants to see what weather is around needs.

Joe (The developer)

And no offense taken! Just want to help you make the right decision for yourself.

I've been using Rainy Days radar lately.

Very simple and fast animated radar for casual use.

Clearly a chaser is going to want something more, but for a quick radar view it's the best I've found so far.

Force shuts a lot when I try to loop it on my Droid Eris. Was much more stable on my phone with your previous version (non looping). Also, you always have to go through the accept terms page every crash

The accept terms is design intent due to legal restrictions, however, I am optimistic that I will be able to get rid of it before too long.

Insofar as crashing, The HTC Eris/Hero are usually quite stable with the program. In fact, I haven't seen a crash on mine in a long, long time. Be sure that you're up to date with version 2.04 (Just visit Android Market for the update)

A few other things. Make sure you have a good 100MB free on your SDCard. Close other apps that you aren't using before starting the program.

What version were you running?

Been using PYKL3 for awhile now. Some of the information in this thread has talked me out of jumping to iPhone just to get Radar Scope. I have a lower end Android phone and don't have any issues at all.

That's good to hear. I work really dilligently to try to make things stable. The radar rendering engine is undergoing major changes which speed things up quite a bit so I'm excited about that and some other things I'm working on. More products, more roads, faster response time. I put a screenshot on Facebook with the higher resolution roads I'll be working toward. Most likely, users will have the option of downloading the higher resolution roads on a per RDA basis.

I'm up to date on your latest version. Probably the 100mb free issue is doing me in. It initially boots up fine but if I try any task such as zoom in, the force close message comes up instantly

Gotcha....I'm presently working on the new display engine which will GREATLY reduce memory usage and speed many things up.

Sounds great. The only other question I have is since the latest update, all the storm cells have a white cloud like patch underneath, whereas the old non looping version had the black background. Is this something I can adjust?

That shouldn't be there and must be an artifact of your handset. What make of phone is it? I've never had anyone report this sort of artifact, but there's a first time for everything.

I have a colleague at work with an Eris (Verizon) and he's never seen anything like you are describing. Any chance you can capture a picture of the device and send it to [email protected]? Maybe seeing it will trigger some idea of what might be going on. HTC handsets have more "quirks" than any other from what I've seen...by a long shot.
