Well written and in a professional manner-like forecast as usual Robert.  I have to say that I like our chances here for another potential of a decent winter for the third time.  Of course, we know there's always that chance to be wrong but hey it's weather forecasting and no meteorologist on this earth could ever be correct consistently.  If that were the case, we wouldn't have the need to further advance our technology and be able to discover new things and creating fresh ideas for better accuracy.  It would make the science become boring eventually.  You've been on such a roll with many of your predictions and I would love to see you nail this upcoming season.  Keep up the good work and let there be many days and nights of model drama to go around haha.  Until then, we can only look forward to the season and ponder the possibilities in store.  Here's to a third fantastic winter. :)

I take it posts such as the one referenced are reasons why you are rarely seen nowadays...

Um. No. Mr. Bob is a great MET and has been around for a hell of a long time. TBH I wanted to say the exact same thing. Hard enough to make a winter forecast this far out and people are asking about spring weather and the possibly of SVR season. That's why you start another thread. Guess you can't make everyone happy though.

Agreed.

I think Blue Ridge meant something similar to you.....

And Thanks but perhaps I am just a crotchety old bastard these days...I just burnt out as an admin at Eastern back in its heyday...and there were behaviors from then that still rub me the wrong way...And why would you want to chase in the SE versus the plains anyway if you had the resources to do either? April 27th is a once in a lifetime event...SE chasing is nothing like that.

I will be around for any interesting winter developments...this time last year we are about to the day of the Chick. Dam tornado...this fall has been a little boring to say the least.

At any rate, if it does not irritate Robert, I should just butt out anyway...

I'm actually on yours and his side. When I said "posts such as the one referenced," I was referring to the post Mr. Bob was questioning. I agree things are more lax and as a result less constructive it seems.

EDIT

Robert, I have a stupid question: Old timers used to say a warm November means a cold winter (and vice versa). Looking at the current NAO status we have been basically positive since mid August. Looks like the NAO see-saws from negative to positive for months at a time. Should we be hoping for the positive pattern to continue to say the last part of November (I think like last year)?

I think the correlation is actually higher if November is cold. Something like 60-40% I think.

great year!!! That's when I was bornthumbsupsmileyanim.gif

I, too was born in '73 (actually, over a week prior to the February '73 storm). A heckuva year, huh? LOL Definitely, moreso for snow lovers in these parts.

I'm not sure whether you've seen this or not.... But, here is a pretty, thorough synopsis of the February 1973 snowstorm. Word has it that most people didn't see it coming. Some of you have been lucky to see over a foot of snow (January 2000 and February 2004). I'm truly wishing a storm of this caliber hit our areas very, very soon.

I recall someone saying that the forecasters around Columbia were calling for it to snow, but they said it wasn't going to stick - and they ended up with 16 inches on the ground. Here's another good write-up on that one from Allan Huffman - http://raleighwx.ame...om/Feb1973.html

Actually, I remember hearing about the forecasters in Columbia were calling for rain. Once, it started snowing they were only expecting a dusting. Suddenly, it kept snowing and snowing and the forecasters continued to up their totals. This is what I've heard about the scenario.

Here is a story (along, with a few pictures) from 2009 on February '73 snowstorm. Joe Pinner, an avid snowlover, speaks vividly about the event.

I was born on the 1st. Yeah, I recall you mentioning how you were in Columbia during the aftermath of the early-January snowstorm. Very, little equipment here. Looking forward to you coming here a time or two this coming winter. :snowman::thumbsup:
