QVectorman
Does anyone know where you can find historic data for the MJO either in data form or phase diagrams? It looks like the ESRL Climate Indices page is about to add one but it's not functional yet.

weatherwiz
does MJO data only go back to 1974?
Thunderhead
does MJO data only go back to 1974? Yes, because that's as far back as the appropriate satellite data go. Most papers that use outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) data state that the dataset begins in June 1974. (The OLR dataset can be downloaded from ESRL at http://www.esrl.noaa.gov/psd/data/gridded/data.interp_OLR.html )
