ORH_wxman
in 2007 i had 2.5 feet of snow in november.....this doesnt look anything like that, at least in terms of sensible wx And it wont when the month is over too. This could be a horror show coming up for the final week of the month and early Dec when everyone expects it to become colder and more wintry with real threats. I'm hoping the Euro ensembles and the latest guidance trending that way is wrong, but its not easy to completely to ignore the shift. I will really want to see how it handles that EPO block late next week...models don't always do well on those....so hopefully they are breaking it down way too quickly, and if they are, then that changes a lot of things. ORH_wxman
I'm starting to think I should not have changed my answer...... Eh, as long as you stick to 1993....you are ok. That was a hideous December...warmth and hopeless until we got a little teaser on 12/19 only be blitzed by a lakes cutter and 55F rainstorm a couple days later. Real winter didn't start until 12/29 that year.

Not my favorite winter (that goes to 1992-1993), but it was close...def a top 5 for me in my life. It ('93-'94) was more epically anomalous in BOS than here...we had 100" but BOS had nearly the same amount despite averaging 25 inches less. I doubt the PAC looks as good as that winter though. What I want to see (or rather what NOT to see) is to stop seeing the low heights always camp out over AK....when that ridge moves in, I'd like to see it be a bit stubborn rather than easily giving way to low heights there again. Arnold214
I wonder what like a 1 in 10,000 year storm would be like. The stratospheric air would probably kill you.

weathafella
That storm still seems kind of fake....surreal....it didn't happen, did it? Ensembles seem to develop enough of a west based NAO to hold the Pacific at bay until It comes around hopefully.

GFS ens is colder in the Nov 17-20 range, but still has the warm up after that but then cools it down again late in the period around T-day. They aren't as bad looking as the Euro ensembles, but that isn't exactly a whole lot of comfort.

I think the silver lining is the fact that we could have a bad 500 mb pattern with enough of a cold air press from the north to keep us colder than one might expect. There are still a few small snow piles in areas parking lots that remind me. But yeah, that was just outta control. I still keep my pics from the night of Oct 29th while working close to my heart... As long as it not horrific, we can away with it once climo comes into play more in December...but we'll need a little more help for late Nov/early Dec winter events. Well that's the thing. I'd go outside during my night shift during the storm and it looked and felt exactly like January. Except the only difference was that you would hear the rustling of oak leaves in the distance. That just floored me.

To hear trees snapping/etc during the snow was incredible. Losing power for several days was a whole other thing--but I'm sure Ryan can elaborate more on that. Still...during the storm itself, to have no power...hear the trees bending/breaking...see the snow..it was unbelievable.

A lot of people were able to experience what many of us in the interior at elevations heard during the December 2008 Ice Storm....that night it was literally shotguns going on every 2-3 seconds...not every 2-3 minutes. I think the periodocity might have been slightly different because in this storm it seemed more larger chunks of the trees lost themselves instead of a slow pruning to death that happened in the ice storm. I want to the Giants-Pats game this past weekend (which was totally out of control in and of itself...yeah baby!) but the increase in tree damage from Taunton to Foxboro was pretty amazing. That increase in elevation was pretty crucial.

BTW, I just looking through the ice storm thread to find my pics (I'm not on my PC which has all my ice storm pics stored) and my favorite quote is this after I finally got back online at a panera bread that morning and posted some pics I'm going to go back through this thread and other one to see how many people cancelled this event before it even started. This October storm was definitely more anomalous for sure...but I'll still never forget that disaster that occurred at like 31F the whole time 850s of +10C, lol. Ice can't happen can it? ORH_wxman
Euro ensembles looks a tad better...but not a whole lot. A bit colder for turkey day. They probably couldn't have looked much worse, so its not a surprise. Its colder for the Thanksgiving period. Maybe if we are lucky, we can get a snow event out that.
