CTWeatherFreak
Can someone tell me what the cause of these false echos all over the eastern half of the country are caused by? When you focus and expand any one of these areas, they look like precip, only theyre not... They only seem to occur at night, and it can be way misleading, except Ive come to recognize them as false echoes.. Yet I have no idea what's causing the phenomenon. JSchwake28
I believe the one's you're seeing are returns that the radar detects due to radar beams being bent towards the ground because of the highly stable atmosphere.
DaculaWeather
Most of the radars you see doing that are in "Clear Air Mode" . The radar is more sensitive and picks ups more crap. http://www.desktopdoppler.com/help/clear-vs-precip.htm

Ed Lizard
I'll see radar splotches on Great Lakes' state radars right near the land/water interface. Not a sea breeze boundary. I spent all Summer watching sea breeze boundaries fail to spark the usual afternoon storms around here...
