Thunder Road
I finally downloaded the latest version of the BUFKIT (10.11 I think) but I can't seem to figure out how to set locations besides KBUF and KICT and whatever it comes with. I followed the tutorial, did exactly what it did, put my own locations in, saved it, rebooted it. But mine still aren't there. Any suggestions? It's really bothering me that I can't use it for weather that I care about.

BeauDodson
Conisdering that I don't know...I'm going to guess that I didn't. You probably know this - but just in case you don't If you go here http://www.meteo.psu...NUS_NAM_18.html Pick your model Then choose a city Right click and hit SAVE TARGET AS (with Internet Explorer) Then save it to the BUFKIT DATA file in your program files Then go back to BUFKIT and click the model you want to view (you may have to click another model and click back to the one you want in order to get it to update the new files) and your city should show up The BUFGET program can be programmed to pull in the data on its own - it should have downloaded into your BUFKIT file (programs) - if not you can download it from the main site (pretty sure it downloads it automatically). You would have to load BUFGET separately - you will see it in your program folders When you go to SETUP (top right of BUFKIT) are you seeing this pop up? Thunder Road
Yes, that's what I see. Thank you Beau, that affirms what I've been figuring out via trial and error for the last hour. Unfortunately now it's time for homework, but if I finish early tonight I'll come back to it run BUFGET. When I was running it before, it kept putting various sites (like BUF, OUN and ICT) in even though I deleted them from List A each time. To me, those sites are clutter, and if I need them, I will load them when the time comes. Any way to make those go away so that I only see GGY, LM2, and whatever else might interest me? You can basically go to your local NWS office's website/their bufkit site for your area.. copy the URLS into it and make sure to save the profile. Everytime I download the program, the first thing I do is go into the Installation folder's area and delete the pre-installed data files for whatever cities and edit the profile in bufget for whatever I want. Then I download the files and am okay. In my area a couple models are/aren't run for my area.. so I have to go into the bufkit options and rename/remove some of the models listed. Thunder Road
Ok so I thought by archiving data using BUFGET, the BUFKIT would automatically update with the new run? But it doesn't. This thing is not worth the trouble...
BeauDodson
Ok so I thought by archiving data using BUFGET, the BUFKIT would automatically update with the new run? But it doesn't. This thing is not worth the trouble... It is well worth figuring out. THIS is the program that you use to forecast weather - coupled with obs/satellite/radar. But BUFKIT is an essential tool. It may take some time to learn but it is worth the time and effort. All you need to do is hit the button GET DATA at the top right Then it will pop up the window for BUFGET Then hit GET PROFILES on the pop up box It should update your data You can add profiles by using the SAVE PROFILE LIST button (A through V) For example - my A list looks like this Some of these are HOUR specific - but others are not The NAM would be the 00z and 12z The NAMm would be the off hours - 06 and 18z Or ETA and ETAm - depending on which site you use You can also make different profiles for different hours - the A through V list on the BUFGET pop up box Thunder Road
Oh so I still have to click "GET DATA" every time but then I don't have to copy & paste the links to the data every time? I see. And by just clicking on the letter for that profile list it saves the new stuff I put in? So I can delete all the stuff in List A, and put my new stuff in (the NAM for LM2, GYY, PHL, for instance) and then it will only show me those? Sorry to sound patronizing, but did you try restarting the program? I think the same thing happened to me and when I restarted it was back again. I'll agree that the BUFKIT is a great tool, but it seems like it's not very user-friendly (and the tutorials don't go into nearly enough detail). Oh and thanks Beau for all your help, next conference I'll buy you a drink. It'll have to be a Pepsi, but nonetheless, it's on me.

For the bolded, that's where my issues first occurred, I left clicked too much and it disappeared and I tried right clicking like 1000 times but nothing. I'd try removing it completely from your comp, then re-downloading the latest distribution package from WDTB. Yes but be careful on pushing the right letter - one if for SAVE and one is for LOAD - get them confused and you could mess up your settings. You have multiple letters so that you can make a list for different Z times Or you can make lists for certain regions - whatever you want to do. But, yes - once you have them set all you have to do is hit GET DATA at the top of BUFKIT (right side) and then it should bring up your BUFGET profiles - hit GET PROFILES at the top of your pop-up. If there any errors then it should alert you with another popup. Sometimes there are errors - occasionally an error will cause it to shut down - then you will need to reopen the program. BUFKIT isn't perfect and is not without bugs - but 99% of the time it will serve you well.

I talked to Ed Mahoney and told him the problem like I was having it myself. He said I zoomed so far in on the temp scale that it's off the charts. He said try zooming back out by right-clicking several times. Since you had the toggle button for 2m temps, it makes sense the scale was there...it's just highly zoomed in. If you're getting the scale and it's only negative...you need to re-zoom in toward zero to "center it" and redo the unzooming again a few times. It's kinda tedious but it will eventually give you right scale.
