Midlo Snow Maker
They are reporting over 8" total for the event at Canaan Heights (near 3700' elevation). Whereas, here in town at 3100' we had a little less than two inches for the event. I can literally drive two miles up to Canaan Heights and there is over 5 inches of snow on the ground. I bet on the highest peaks in the county over 4000' its approaching a foot for the event. holy hell thats incredible for so early in the year
mattie g
No its not.. I have been in the 40's/50's fogged in for weeks in Boston Harbour with blowing mist and 20 mph winds.. it can get much worse.. But this isn't much different. I concede that it would be worse if this were the result of a backdoor in May.
Bob Chill
Wow. Canaan is a very wintry scene this AM.

mappy
I haven't complained much about the chilly weather, but today I am. I'm sitting in a 65 degree cube with a space heater running because my old historic building requires a broiler to be turned on in order for the heat to work, at least in the part of the office where I work. Other coworkers have central heat/air so their office spaces are nice and toasty.

mappy
Don't worry, my relatively new building still has the AC on. The last office we were in was like that, the entire building have to be switched over from A/C to heat. The lack of heat sucks more here as only a few of us are suffering while others are not. mitchnick
first snow at wintergreen snowing at Big Meadows on Skyline Drive http://www.nps.gov/shen/photosmultimedia/bm_webcam.htm and my guess is its snowing a little further north on Skyline Drive, not too far from DC, based on this camera shot at the Pinnacles http://www.nps.gov/webcams-shen/pinnacles.jpg

Avdave
too bad it's a waste and will melt. Well obviously, it is to early for it to stick around but still goes in the books and impressive for the time of year
snowfan
We seem to get events like this every few years. I think the October 2009 snowfall was more impressive considering how low in elevation snow accumulated.....and it was fairly widespread across the northern half of Pennsylvania. Many areas saw 3-6" with isolated amounts nearing 10". That was homecoming weekend for PSU.......the top of 7 mountains had a solid 8-10".

Bob Chill
I took a trip to the big meadows area of skyline in mid october a few years ago (can't remember which year) and there was snow on the ground and it was snowing lightly. I'm pretty sure it was October 12th but I'll have to dig up some photos to be sure. It was pretty cool. People built a bunch of little snowmen all over the place. It was the earliest that I've personally seen flakes flying and snow on the ground on the EC.

A RECORD LOW MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE OF 51 DEGREES WAS SET AT BALTIMORE WASHINGTON INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT YESTERDAY. THIS BREAKS THE OLD RECORD OF 53 DEGREES SET BACK IN 1939. That's relative to an October 2nd 1981-2010 normal maximum at BWI of 72. Dulles also broke the old record -- by four degrees -- with a maximum of 50 versus a normal of 73. Reagan had to settle for a tie with 1939 with a maximum of 52, versus a normal of 73. As impressive as these differences are relative to the normals (21, 23, and 21 degrees, respectively), just two Octobers ago we beat them. The differences from the 1981-2010 normal maximums on October 16, 2009 at BWI, IAD, and DCA were 24, 24, and 23 degrees, respectively (43 vs. 67, 44 vs. 68, and 45 vs. 68). MN Transplant
Record low maxes in play again today I'd guess. Looks less likely today. BWI is already out of the running, DCA and IAD are within a degree. DCA: 53 IAD: 49 BWI:
