mappy
A tweet from Alex Liggitt from DC - The Tornado Warnings going out southeast of DC are just a test so be sure to ignore those.
mappy
So I think it is safe to say those going out for MD are also a test, as many of us have been saying.
Avdave
So I think it is safe to say those going out for MD are also a test, as many of us have been saying. Same for the ones in VA. I got the same tweet about them. WUSA is saying some one hacked the NWS server and put them out
Avdave
They never said this is a test. They just said it and moved on. From WJLA weather http://www.wjla.com/weather/ **DISREGARD ANY TORNADO WARNINGS, THEY ARE JUST TEST MESSAGES. THANKS!** A frontal zone has slipped into the region today bringing with it some light showers and even a rumble of thunder. Expect highs to range from the 70s south of D.C. to lower 60s northwest of town. Tonight, a continued chance for showers will be possible with lows in the upper 40s to mid 50s. This front will hang around for much of the day tomorrow as well, with plenty of clouds and more showers possible. Winds will become breezy tomorrow afternoon as the front moves through the region. Much cooler air will filter into the region Thursday night into Friday morning, with the majority of the area waking up to temperatures in the 30s. Highs Friday should only top out in the mid 50s under partly cloudy skies. Saturday appears to have a number of questions associated with it as an area of low pressure skirts by to the southeast. There is a chance for rain with the highest liklihood south and east of the city. High temperatures will be quite chilly only approaching the 50 degree mark. Sunday should improve greatly with highs in the upper 50s under sunny skies as high pressure moves back overhead.
Master of Disaster
The problem is that the Tornado Warning FIPS code is NOT authorized as a TEST. EVER!!! There is an EAS test message in there for tests.

mappy
When the NWS sends out an email saying they are "working furiously at the highest levels of our agency to find the source of these invalid alerts and stop them immediately" you know it is something more than an "oops"
Master of Disaster
When the NWS sends out an email saying they are "working furiously at the highest levels of our agency to find the source of these invalid alerts and stop them immediately" you know it is something more than an "oops" Notice how many times someone put "this is a test" in that message? That is classic exercise verbage like someone was trying to release a test message but hit the template file instead. Interesting to note that the voice that came with it was a MEMA guy I know which makes me wonder if its MD State that made the oops.
The Dude
EAS Activated for a tornado warning for Montgomery and Howard County. I think its safe to say that's a mistake. I blame AccuWx!! Ian
...test weather warnings that were labeled as tests, but improperly coded as active warnings, were inadvertently distributed to subscribers of the weather wire and emergency management news wire. Avdave
From NOAA HQ in Silver Spring, MD per Topper Shutt False Warnings 10/26/2011 5:33 PM EDT Tags: False, #tornado, Warnings False tornado warnings and severe thunderstorm warnings were issued for most of the Metro Area Wednesday afternoon around 2:30 PM. The warnings were test messages as NOAA headquarters in Silver Spring tested software. The messages did say 'test' in many lines of the warnings but the messages were encoded incorrectly triggering the alert systems in the Metro Area. Susan Buchanan, of NOAA in Silver Spring, said that the warnings were supposed to remain internal. Here's the official statement from the National Weather Service in Sterling: All, Earlier today, test weather warnings that were labeled as tests, but improperly coded as active warnings, were inadvertently distributed to subscribers of the weather wire and emergency management news wire.Though the messages were clearly labeled as a test, they should not have been distributed outside the agency. We regret any confusion this has caused and assure our customers that we will do all we can to prevent this from happening in the future. http://www.wusa9.com/life/community/persona.aspx?U=32f6c1326ff54c35a763a1b958ee9ad9&plckPersonaPage=BlogViewPost&plckUserId=32f6c1326ff54c35a763a1b958ee9ad9&plckPostId=Blog%3a32f6c1326ff54c35a763a1b958ee9ad9Post%3a77e49bb1-7cc7-46b5-8c56-4d21474d6030&plckController=PersonaBlog&plckScript=personaScript&plckElementId=personaDest

Master of Disaster
Strange part is it didn't come from LWX seemingly Agreed 100% according to the EAS plan. The NWS has sole release authority for those. In fact, out of the 25 or so EAS messages, 18 are weather. The rest are all EM messages. Out of the remaining 7 that I have release authority for, the only one thats weather related is a "Volcano Warning".
