weak rotation going right overhead via radar.. cant go outside to see

umd lying about tornado about to hit campus

I couldn't see any rotation and I was in a pretty good vantage spot, on top of the CVS in Tenleytown; there's a rooftop parking lot there. (It's probably about the best place in my immediate neighborhood to see a storm come in, if you want to stay in your car.)

That said, pretty astonishing storm for October. About a 10 minute cloudburst that ranks up there with the best of 'em, generous cloud-to-cloud lightning, turbulent skies. Picturesque storm that didn't leave a lot of grief (e.g., power outages, flooded basements) behind. It had that supercell look to it, which we don't see that often around here. First interesting weather since Irene.

I saw low dark clouds that appeared similar to a large wall cloud heading east away from Fairfax around 6:30, which was after the tornado warning I believe. Any idea what time this image was shot?

Between 6-7PM? I caught the low scud/wall cloud on video when it got here later [ trying to upload]. I didn't see it rotating, but to the left of it there was a low level "shelf" cloud at a similar altitude that was rotating and fanning out, looked like a frisbee in the sky, which was followed by a wind blown downpour, went from ESE winds to WSW in a few seconds.

Prob between 6 and 630. Could be wall cloud or scud. Would think a torn would have a hard time being unphotographed in the city. These were low topped sups embedded in a line up here. Probably about what we can expect from that. We are so often just a bit too far north for best instability etc.

Back... Jason and I got within a mile of the "rotation" from the formerly tor-warned cell in SW MoCo, but it looks like it occluded just as it was crossing the river. We saw a non-rotating lowering (wouldn't really call it a wall cloud), and that was pretty much it. Ditched the cell to see if anything to the east would produce, but nothing.

Weatherunderground shows 2.48" of rain today. An inch in the last 20-30 minutes.

At about 6 P.M., I got off a bus on Lawyers Road in Herndon, VA, just over the Reston line. It took my only about 7-8 minutes to walk home, but my pants were completely soaked, even though I had an umbrella. That's the hardest I've ever seen it rain in October.

Our area ended up with 3.03. Another round on the way? Going to check radar.

This just posted on twitter:

This has been the weirdest year for thunderstorms I can remember. Strange setups, synoptics, strange movements not the typical west to east or something like it. I have had close to 40 thunderstorm days this year much more than last.

You must have stolen mine, terrible t-storm year for me, I got maybe 2-3" of rain all summer with maybe 5-6 storms total, no severe-force winds or hail to speak of.

Fall 2011 has been crazy wierd though, cloudy/tropical September, early october cold shot, then the bone-dry ridge with those 80 degree days followed by this..
