Awesome radiational cooling so far this evening, at least for Wisconsin. Down to 36° F at MSN after a high of 53° F. Clouds will move in during the next few hours though, and get quite thick in the mid-upper levels. Our low could be before midnight due to that.

I knew it felt chilly when i just let the dog out but i figured it would show like 41 at the armpit of radiating... 35 out, impressive for here. another if only tomorrow was winter it would be a 2-4"

up to 37.. last yr we had our first freeze of the fall this date.

They sure underestimated radiational cooling tonight; before they were forecasting 36 for a low; just checked my point forecast and it predicts 29. Every degree might help if it somehow could translate to tomorrow, even though I know it is futile.

We officially are below freezing for the first time this Fall at KDTW, currently 31 degrees.

The consolation is that you beat NYC! So funny to think that EWR had a 5" snowstorm, but is still waiting for their first freeze. Same for NYC. Kind of funny to think that theoretically it's possible to have the earliest snowstorm on record but also have the latest freeze on record.

Nice stats, sir.

Somewhat amazingly, despite the beautiful chilly and clear nights recently in the Chicago area, ORD still hasn't dropped to 32F this Fall. Two nights ago it hit 34, and last night it hit 33 around midnight before S winds came in and stopped the cooling. Per your separate post, I believe we're getting close to the latest freeze on record at ORD! It just goes to show how these milestones don't necessarily tell the tale of the "feel" of the weather...but interesting nonetheless.

Thanks.

I did a quick check, and it looks like ORD, STL, and EVV are the only ones left (of the first order/major sites in the Midwest) that haven't hit 32º. Matter of fact, STL has had only two nights/min temps in the 30's this Autumn.

Bump. Tomorrow is the last day. ;)

Also, I think I screwed up on the first tiebreaker. I was looking for an amount rather than a date, but wasn't clear enough (some have picked amounts, some just a date, and a few both). My bad. Probably will eliminate that one and use the other 3 tiebreakers.

Latest freeze on record for Chicago is Nov 24th, 1930 (30F).

we must of had a serious wind gust overnight or early morning cause i woke up to our patio umbrella completely out of the table and on the ground.

Yeah it was kind of weird. We had a period of 40-45mph gusts within a half hour period, but other than that they only gusted to around 30mph. Must have been a narrow corridor of decent mixing moving through. 925mb winds are ripping pretty good over northern Illinois today. BTW winds aren't gusty at all right now with some light rain moving through.

Thanks...that's crazy. I guess UHI existed back then too...or at a minium, the Fall was very mild up to that point and kept the lake water temp above normal.

For ORD, it's much sooner...I believe Nov. 5 or thereabouts.

November 6, 1998

Also, today is the average first date of a trace of snowfall for Chicago. Looking ahead, average first measurable (0.1" or greater) is November 16th, and the average first 1.0" or greater is December 2nd. From the looks of things, no snow of any kind for the foreseeable future...
