WeatherNC
My salvia is still in bloom... Saw a hummingbird today on the blue, likely passing through on its migration down south and stopped over for a quick drink. rduwx
My salvia is still in bloom... Saw a hummingbird today on the blue, likely passing through on its migration down south and stopped over for a quick drink. My salvia is still blooming also. As a matter of fact we have some gerber daisies that look great right now. BTW, congrats on the green tag. You finally took the plunge.
JQPublic
Amazing colors here right now. I was worried it wouldn't be that great, but the tuliptrees and hickories had amazing yellows last week and the red maples are killing it with the reds this week. MountainMarvel
I was around Lake Lure yesterday and the colors are peaking there and toward Chimney Rock Park. The last of the bright reds and yellows will be gone by Wednesday. Here are some shots from Montford Cove just over the Rutherford County line from Thursday. Brightest reds I've seen all season. MountainMarvel
The Bradford Pears might just be the most colorful trees I've seen this year, and they're at their peak in McDowell and Rutherford Counties.
GaWx
2011 Atlanta fall leaves report (better late than never): I wasn't in Atlanta through the entire fall leaf season of 2011. However, I arrived ~11/1-2 and it appeared to be near peak then (supported by other GA wx bb posters). I am unable to compare it to 2010 as I can't find any rating of that year (I also wasn't in Atlanta that entire season). I do have my ratings for 2004-09. What I can say is that judging by others' comments and my own views, 2011 was way better than 2009 and the best since at least 2008. I'm scoring it as an A-. Although they were in the minority, I saw just enough not so colorful trees to keep from going A or A+. However, I suppose it could be graded anywhere from ~A to B+. Fwiw, the tree right outside my Dunwoody residence was at least as bright/colorful as I can recall (going back to the 2006 fall season). Also, a few days later, the colors along I-75 between Atlanta and Macon (on my return to Sav.) were really bright. I'm calling this Dunwoody peak ~11/1, earlier than average although this seemed to be a case of many trees peaking at different times. Other than 2010, which I can't find now, this apparently was the earliest peak since 2006. The average Dunwoody peak since 2005 has been ~11/7 per my records. Note that Sep.-Oct. was pretty dry at KATL, where 4.00" of rainfall fell vs. the 7.87" average. Also, Oct. was a bit cool with cool periods (including clear chilly nights) 10/1-3, 10/19-23, and 10/29-31. This is more evidence that a dry Sep.-Oct. may tend to help the colors and too wet hurt. Fall of 2009, which was dull, had a very wet Sep.-Oct. Fall of 2007, which was colorful, had been dry/drought conditions. The early 2011 peak was likely caused by the coolish Oct. with a good number of clear/crsip nights imo. Per my past posts on Dunwoody leaves: I have 2009 as a C to D. I have 2006-8 in the A to B category...probably an A in at least 2007. 2005 is probably close to a D. I called 2004 a C or better with few details available. -2009: relatively dull peak ~11/6 hurt perhaps by too wet Sep./Oct. -2008: beautiful peak ~11/6 likely helped by the near freezing temp.'s of late Oct. -2007: beautiful peak ~11/12 (later than average due to warmth prior to 10/23) -2006: beautiful peak ~11/2 (early peak due imho to chilly early to mid Oct.) -2005: relatively dull peak ~11/15 but with some small trees not peaking until early Dec. and with lots of beauty! -2004: better than 2005 but no other details
dsaur
Larry, it was one of the longest lasting, prettiest, and wide spread color seasons I can remember in my 30 years down here. It was amazing. And I passed some great trees even today going down town. This was one to remember! Tony
