Hazey
current track wouldn't even give Bermuda TS winds lol. Yeah it looks to miss everyone now except perhaps the Azores. I imagine Bermuda will get some big swells from this though at the very least.
Amped
Nice storm, amazing how it's repelling the shear and making it's own environment. When people say a storm can never make it's own environment it doesn't apply to fish storms.
calamity
Just one of a few visually pleasing storms this year.

Amped
Euro finally got one it looks like. The storm is looking more anular with less bands. But in no way am I saying it's annular.

I endorse this post. Ophelia is a rather sexy tropical cyclone. Convection is lessening it appears, probably peaked already.
HurricaneJosh
Ophelia passed directly over a NOAA buoy overnight, and it recorded a hearty 84 kt with a gust to 101 kt (at 5 m), with 951.9 mb in the eye. Very nice readings. It's a decent cyclone.

Very nice readings. It's a decent cyclone. If there's anything interesting about this season, it's that we've been getting good data from the buoys. Lots of direct buoy hits from fish, surprisingly. U_Thant
Ophelia passed directly over a NOAA buoy overnight, and it recorded a hearty 84 kt with a gust to 101 kt (at 5 m), with 951.9 mb in the eye. Very nice readings. It's a decent cyclone. It's impressive that the buoy recorded 84P101kt while it spent half its time in wave troughs of 40 foot seas. This means Ophelia's peak sustained winds/gusts were under-reported, as was the case when major hurricane Floyd passed directly over NOAA buoy 41010 back in 1999. HurricaneJosh
Wow-- that is a nice pressure/wind trace. It looks to me like the highest winds roughly coincided with the lowest pressure-- which would suggest the eye just missed the buoy. (Or perhaps it's just that the trace in't detailed enough to reveal that the peak wind and lowest pressure occurred at different times.)

Thankfully that buoy has supplemental data and is a great source of info. The lowest one minute wind at lowest pressure occurrence was 25 KTs, it appears that at least part of the eye went over the buoy.

dan88
Looks to be taking at shot at strengthening before it encounters cooler water tomorrow. It's currently over waters about 28C, which is up some from the 27.5C waters it was over last night and this morning, and in response the eye has warmed since this morning, the eyewall has cooled, and convection is expanding. Satellite estimates have been increasing in response as well.

LakeEffectKing
Beautiful Calamity!! Now if THAT had been the satellite loop of Irene (similar pressures) going up the EC...the massive media hype that was evident prior to Irene's arrival, would have been underdone! dan88
Microwave quite impressive for a storm above 32N. Also UW-CIMSS ADT is getting rather high, up to 6.3/6.3/6.4/6.
Amped
The shear is just starting to get it, but I still think it reached CAT4 given the symmetry of the eye. Edit: Oh wait it was cat4 at 8pm which I didn't even know the NHC issued. I should learn to read.
HurricaneJosh
Looks mega-hawt on the Bermuda radar. This cyclone has disabused me of my feeling that a Cat-4 hit on Bermuda is a silly idea. This could have been that.
