OKpowdah
It's a frequently referenced issue with respect to modelling performance. I was wondering if there was any literature on this subject. Thanks!
dendrite
It's a frequently referenced issue with respect to modelling performance. I was wondering if there was any literature on this subject. Thanks! There are a couple of related papers I've read on the subject. Search the journals for the West Coast Picket Fence.

Tropopause_Fold
Thanks!! sam, whatever you find, if you don't mind posting it (links or whatnot) that would be appreciated. i always feel like that theory is mostly garbage with a sliver of truth. skierinvermont
I never really understood that theory.. isn't most of the input data satellite data now anyways? There isn't even land-based obs in the 18z and 06z is there? and they do just as well as the 12z and 00z.
OKpowdah
Here are the primary two articles that I found: http://journals.ametsoc.org/doi/pdf/10.1175/1520-0493%282001%29129%3C2585%3AAOSEWT%3E2.0.CO%3B2 http://journals.ametsoc.org/doi/pdf/10.1175/1520-0477%281995%29076%3C1741%3ATWCPFE%3E2.0.CO%3B2 I'll have to refresh my memory but I think that there are a number of issues with relying on satellite data. I know for one thing, it still has to be calibrated with in situ observations

ORH_wxman
Its overrated...as is apparent by the trivial differences between the 12z/00z runs and the off-hour runs. I'm sure it helps a little, but for the most part its probably not a huge difference. I think in certain setups it can be a bigger difference, but otherwise meh. I think in certain setups it can be a bigger difference, but on the whole its not that big of a deal. i agree. i've always felt and said it has an effect but it's just not that big and is overstated. the data coming in from airplanes and satellites is extremely good and covers the entire globe...if it weren't, the models would be a giant cluster. the spacing in the sounding network is huge...especially out on the left coast.
