I've found that the normally foliage peaks in 2 distinct waves here. The white ashes, sugar maples, and red maples, which are the most vibrant, are already well on their way and should peak between 10/4 and 10/9 give or take. We often get a second peak when the more subtle oaks and beeches peak in the 10/21-10/26 range. During warm years, sometimes the oaks don't defoliate until the first week of November. The foliage will definitely be a bit later than last year, when many maples and ashes peaked in the last week of September due to the abnormally dry conditions we had. Unfortunately due to the dampness of the past 3 to 4 weeks, some of the sugar maples seem to have contracted some sort of leaf fungus, which is causing the leaves to turn yellowy brown and fall off prematurely. This will dampen the color a bit. The best weather for foliage seems to be a moderately wet summer like 2008.

Just got back from a fantastic walk, got some great pics of two different worlds, trees down by the beach have no leaves, grass, ornamental grass all dormant or dead due to the salt, while a block away everything is as green as could be.

mostly sunny

heading to the mid 80s, the boys of summer march on

This was supposed to be an unsettled muggy weekend with lots of showers, etc. It ends up being one if the nicest of the year and I guess we are all happy with what we got.

A beautiful mostly sunny day here with just a few fair wx clouds, nice breeze. 69/60 at 12:30 PM. We should add on a few more degrees.

71/67 in the tropics of Greenfield.

Just split my last chord of wood and I came in looking like I'd gone swimming in my clothes.

Tough to wear long sleeves today but the mosquitoes are thriving.

Can't wait for a freeze. How long?

I did a half a cord last night from about 5-9 PM. Also had to use the saw so I was covered in sawdust sticking to me. It's a good feeling getting all the wood ready for the next winter though. I only have another cord and a half to go so the end is in sight. Probably will wait till next weekend to do the rest so I can enjoy the cooler temps and lower dews instead of torturing myself in this junk.

The best shape I ever was in was during my logging days of my mid 20 s. Mid summer was brutal,.

I would obviously love that analog since this location got over a foot of snow. LOL But it takes so many things to go right. We were right under the upper low in '87 and it actually rained (or was too light to accumulate) all around us, but here the dynamics were so great that it could be overcome when it snowed like hell. You basically would have to be under that sweet spot.

Saturday's storm isn't that much different than October 4 1987. If the troff is a bit more amped we may have a shot at a cutoff.

Yeah I could imagine it wouldn't take very long to get ripped doing logging.Where were you when you were a logger? It doesn't seem like it should be hard work while your doing it but afterwards you can definitely feel that you've been working hard. It is pretty satisfying though. Gives you a small sense of how much easier we have it these days then 1-200 years ago. Either way it needs to get done.

Meanwhile up to 80/67 here with the sun starting to dim a little behind some clouds rolling in after a mostly sunny late morning early afternoon. Can't wait for the upper 50's (supposedly this weekend)

If you make the trough a lot deeper and more negatively tilted plus some colder air, then yes, its a lot like 10/4/87, otherwise it really isn't similar at all.

Thought they were dead at 21-3 but made the big comeback. Guess who's coming to town next week !

See post below.

The next team to lose to the Bills?

AWT.

I watched some of that. Very inspired play by Fitzpatrick, etc

Enjoy the halo... it will be tarnished after next week.

52.0F/45

Dave, sorry about the halo.

You better hope that Gronkowski and Hernandez miss the flight to Buffalo then...

Was out in the S. Berks today and was surprised how few trees have begun to change. (All the moisture this year?)

Nice night out. 51/46 looking forward to a nice week and hoping if we get a stalled front later in the week that E. Ma. gets all the qpf love.

I think they were there......

Good luck with that. The Bill's defense have no chance against Brady, 38-21 Patriots. Feel free to bump this next Sunday. thumbsupsmileyanim.gif

Going to the Monday night Pats game on 11/21 against the Chiefs. The way the chiefs are playing lately and with another injury today, maybe a 72-0 win on tap? weight_lift.gif

Bump.
