You'll have to use that as comfort since there won't actually be any frost there. But thus is the life of living on hilltops.

Yeah, I was just going to add ... it depends on how well the region decouples... You'll have a breeze through 8-10pm depending, than rather abruptly 0000 kicks in... That's when the temp free-falls to the DP.

We're averaging 35F in well mixed, so figure the ground zero value is probably 37 or 38, what it was at dawn I suspect. Where it decoubles, 37/37 will start the frosting on car tops, and if the DP and T fall at all from that point will start intruducing frost to windshields sky-exposed grass/lawn/fields.

The other thing is that with the vegitation still green and doing its thing prior to the equinox such that it is, will tend to offset drying as the evening goes on - not sure what role evaportran plays in this - I suspect not much but some. That may inject some moisture and offset radiational to some degree. not certain though.

As far as Saturday night goes ... originally the runs were suggesting the wind veers SW and picked up enough to have slowly elevating temps after an early low for elevations, and probably not much fall in the valleys. But... now the NAM is going calm - should that happen, tomorrow night may actually rival tonight regardless of MOS products. We'll see.

That was exactly my point.

Just spent the last hour raking leaves (no, I'm not implying it's necessary). My 6-year old has decided to have an "autumn party" after dinner. Nice evening. Pretty breezy, woodsmoke flowing freely. Fall is in the air.

FEW

NW@8mph

Finally set up the weather station with the students from my school; they really enjoyed the short project. I will be reporting temperature and dewpoint as well as conditions from the campus, though I don't have an anemometer so I am using AFN for my wind speed. In any case, we should get into the mid 30s tonight with the low dewpoints and clear skies, leading to some frost here at 1300' elevation on the Hampshire Country School campus. Very crisp evening, and turns out we'll be having the Friday night barbecue inside so that the kids stay a bit warmer.

TGIF!

Is the station hooked to the internet? What kind did you get?

Hope the year's off to a good start.

That may keep temps up in SNE.

I can see the deck off to the SW, but it's not overhead. I'm not sure if it's as far north as Pete. Hopefully, it stays south of him so he can have a free-fall tonight. I'm looking out toward west chesterfield and I'm pretty sure the deck begins just to his south.

It looks like it may have some effect. Maybe they'll thin out as it moves east, but it's a close call especially I-90 and south. Kevin may not cool off much if that happens.

Yes, you're right Mike. Just got in from Worthington Golf Club. Played 9 with a gusty NW wind at the start but now winds are flat. From the high points I could see a cloud deck down to the SE/S/SW. Clear overhead presently. Expect some frost in at least the lower reaches of the property tonight.

Hey Mike,

Local news claims that a 400lb buffalo at a farm in Haverhill was killed by 10 coyotes.

no sh*t. That's funny. That's not the case with this one. Their pasture is behind the farm across the street. The land behind us is heavily wooded. I have no doubt that one was hauled back and buried shallowly so the scavengers can do their work. I imagine an adult cow will feed a lot of coyotes for a long time. And buzzards, too.

Anybody following the big story here can find the updated info at berkshireeagle.com. Here's the pic from the front page. Look familiar?

I like the way they use the words "his compound". It's like the Kennedy's.

Also, I can't believe no one's bailed them out. It's not like they look guilty or anything. :arrowhead:

Meanwhile, the heavier gusts of wind hve slacked, but there's still a breeze blowing here at the Pit.

Dead calm here in the Glen.

Winds dying fast here. ALB WFO has me right on the line between freeze warning and frost advisory. I don't think anyone in these parts will see freeze conditions in this area IMO since I don't think anyone will have an extended period of temperatures below freezing, especially if the cirrus deck interferes. I do think some of the ideal radiational cooling spots may reach 32 (such as along the Housatonic at the valley floor) for a while. Most others will probably be 33 to 36 with patchy frost in the exposed locations. I think the frost advisory is warranted, but the freeze warning is a little excessive.

Nice and clear here. Check

Sunset. Check.

Commence plummet. Check.

Already down to 51F from a high of 64F.

Yeah if it's just some whispers of cirrus, it won't do too much. I just don't know if it will cloud up more later on and level out temps. Not that it matters, but it might be the difference between 40F and 32F.

Hey Mitch, I think you have it just right. I'm expecting the first light frost of the season. Average first frost date here is the 17th so right on schedule. Probably an hour or two either side of dawn.
