Florida getting hit with record cold

Recommended Posts

May be time to switch to Texas Ruby Red Grapefruit.

Closer to home, I watered the heck out of my orange tree last night. 4ºF disparity between IAH and DWH. 26º at DWH, which probably did kill the tree if it happened in my back yard. But you live in Texas, in the mid-latitudes, four distinct seasons, 3 snowstorms in the last 6 years, you take your chances. Kills me that one of my oranges died last year when several neighbors with Manila Palms, completely unsuited for our brutal winters, had their trees survive.

Anyway, if not Texas grapefruit, they grow oranges in California and Brazil...

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION

NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE MELBOURNE FL

345 PM EST MON DEC 13 2010

...DAMAGING HARD FREEZE THE NEXT TWO NIGHTS...

...DANGEROUSLY COLD WIND CHILLS TONIGHT...

.DISCUSSION...

TONIGHT...A VERY COLD NIGHT IN STORE. THE EVENING WILL START OUT

CHILLY AS MID AFTERNOON TEMPS ARE ONLY IN THE MID/UPPER 40S THROUGH

MUCH OF THE AREA...WFO MLB HAS DROPPED INTO THE UPPER 40S PRESENTLY.

12Z MODEL GUIDANCE CAME IN EVEN COLDER...EVEN AFTER ADJUSTING THE

NUMBERS UP...ALL EC FL COUNTIES ARE STILL EXPECTED TO HAVE A HARD

FREEZE TONIGHT. WINDS WILL STAY UP AT 10-15 MPH SO IT WILL BE A

RELATIVELY RARE ADVECTIVE HARD FREEZE EVENT TONIGHT.

SPECIFICALLY:

THE RURAL/OUTLYING INTERIOR LOCATIONS WILL BE COLDEST WITH LOWS IN

THE LOWER 20S EXPECTED. IN THESE AREAS...DURATIONS BELOW FREEZING OF

UP TO 8-10 HOURS CAN BE EXPECTED WITH VALUES FALLING BELOW 28 IN

THESE AREAS FOR UP TO 6-8 HOURS.

THE METRO LOCATIONS ON THE MAINLAND CAN EXPECT LOWS IN THE MID 20S

WITH DURATIONS BELOW FREEZING OF UP TO 5-8 HOURS POSSIBLE AND VALUES

BELOW 28 FOR UP TO 2-5 HOURS.

FOR THE BARRIER ISLANDS:

BARRIER ISLANDS IN VOLUSIA/BREVARD COUNTIES CAN EXPECT FREEZING

TEMPERATURES WITH LOWS IN THE UPPER 20S TO NEAR 30.

BARRIER ISLANDS IN INDIAN RIVER/ST LUCIE AND MARTIN COUNTIES CAN

EXPECT LOWS NEAR 30 TO THE LOWER 30S WITH MANY LOCATIONS REACHING TO

FREEZING.

NORTHWEST WINDS WILL DECREASE TO 10 TO 15 MPH BUT REMAIN UP THROUGH

THE OVERNIGHT...PRODUCING WIND CHILLS IN THE TEENS BY SUNRISE MANY

LOCATIONS AND SO A WIND CHILL WARNING WAS ISSUED IN ADDITION TO THE

HARD FREEZE WARNING.

Advective freeze vs. radiational cooling freeze; I would be more concerned tomorrow night...

True that... actual lows and wind chills will be a bigger effect on the population tonight, but the big concern over the vegetation will be the continuing (albeit very slightly less) cold when frost could actually form tomorrow night.

Wouldn't the traditional citrus protection methods, sprinklers, to form an ice barrier, or smudge pots work better in light wind?

The frost will have a really, REALLY tough time forming with the wind blowing and the dewpoints dropping, though. You could be right... I'm not well-versed in Florida's agricultural habits.

Yes

have been telling my ag folks since friday that the winds might stay up

that of course would reduce a FROST... but NOT a freeze which can occur without a frost.

in other words 28 degrees for 3 or 4 hrs with a n winds art 7 or 9 MPH ....NO major frost

below 25 degrees for 6+ htrrs with a nw winds at 7 or 9 MPH

sure you have NO frost But that Orange is now a fooking baseball

Right - in plain frost situation some plants can avoid damage if they are not hit by the sun when frost is still on them. But at those temps, it doesn't matter, they totally freeze and it's a moot point.

Meh. 39 from Leesburg to Winter Haven at this hour. Much to do about nothing regarding the 'crop' tonight.

So you didn't but FCOJ futures?

26F at DW Hooks, about as close to my house as IAH. Did my orange tree survive? Haven't had the courage to check. BTW, 26 at Hooks and just a glancing blow for Texas. If the people at NWS MLB are talking lower to mid 20s, I'm not ready to dismiss them.
