January 1 through August 31, 2011 is the wettest such period at O'Hare Airport...by a relatively large margin. Records at ORD began in November of 1958 (or available data did). Note this is only for records at O'Hare from 1959 to present.

The haves and the have nots in the Midwest are not very far apart.

Yep. Just look at this past summer. Using LAF and two relatively close locations to us...

Lafayette, IN (LAF): 14.76" (+3.23")

Champaign, IL (CMI): 5.82" (-6.30")

Indianapolis, IN (IND): 7.34" (-4.59")

When you look at the YTD precip maps, It's definitely been more wet than dry, but there have been a few big dry pockets in between the wet spots.

It's just September 8th, but Cleveland is already in the top ten wettest years on record (going way back to mid 1870s!)

1. 53.83 1990

2. 53.51 1878

3. 50.38 1950

4. 48.53 1992

5. 48.34 1972

6. 47.82 1890

7. 46.44 1996

8. 44.59 2008

x. 44.29 2011 *as of Sept 8th

9. 44.22 1951

10. 43.99 1947

A top 3 wettest year is almost a lock, with wettest year ever likely even if precip starts to run below average through the end of the year. Looking at the YTD % of normal maps, not one area in Ohio is running a deficit for rainfall this year, the only state in the US to show that. It's just incredibly green and lush out there. Looks like mid spring. I wonder what effect this will have on the fall foliage?
