toad strangler
If Agnes and Allison can get retired, so can Irene. The inland flooding from this storm has been ridiculous. Irene should be put to sleep, even though I feel she was completely lol as a TC post NC. The Bahamas got raked and the flooding / loss of life in the NE should suffice. I think the "no" votes must just be contrarian votes. I'd like to see why people actually selected no

JamieOber
IT the storm was an IT thx I remember this from my old UPI stylebook I used to use for news stories. Storms don't have gender. I also recall this: "Avoid using potentially sexist-sounding verbiage in describing hurricanes, as in Fickle Gloria teases East Coast"

Clinch Leatherwood
agreed. This really is a no-brainer for the many reasons stated in this thread. I think the "no" votes must just be contrarian votes. I'd like to see why people actually selected no I didn't vote and I don't really care about storm names. It's idiotic in this day and age the NHC ever has to repeat ANY of the names to begin with..... I mean really, they cannot come up with unique names every year? Geez. It'll be retired because it had flooding and may have delivered some hurricane force winds in the Carolinas.

LakeEffectKing
You clearly don't understand how tropical cyclones work. A little rough there Mallo..... The way I read it, I think one can ascertain that he meant the eyewall was devoid of wind....the only way to get to the center is through the EW.... Juliancolton
It'll be retired because it had flooding and may have delivered some hurricane force winds in the Carolinas. That's gotta be the most misleading characterization of the storm I've read yet. Yeah, just a little ponding on roadways and squally winds. dan11295
Most likely yes for multiple reasons: 1) Bahamas may ask for Retirement. Irene did considerable damage throughout the island chain. 2) Significant number of fatalities for a U.S. Landfalling hurricane 3)U.S. Damage estimates based on modeling are $7 Billion right now. That is enough for retirement. Of course actual numbers wont be known for a while though because of the wide area impacted.
RevWarReenactor
You clearly don't understand how tropical cyclones work. Of course I don't. But in Mdecoy's world, a storm center that has no wind, is not a hurricane. You have a center of circulation, you have the strongest winds just outside of it. That is a hurricane. Clinch Leatherwood
I agree! And there are new names created every day! (Snooki, Lady Gaga, etc....) All they have to do is use pornstar names and they'll be good and fresh every year. Hurricane Sasha, Topical Storm Franceska, Typhoon Abella, Tropical Storm Tweety Hurricane Mercedes, Tropical Storm Sunshine, Hurricane Bunny and for male names, Hurricane Hammer, Tropical Storm Holmes This list goes on and on, shame that we limit all the good names to strippers and porn stars. As far as miscategorizing the storm. It delivered flooding and people died. It was at best a category 1 hurricane, a pretty weak one in terms of sustained hurricane force, or even strong tropical force sustained winds. Was a big, angry storm nonetheless. Shawn
I voted "no" out of opinion other than facts but there were tons of warning and preparation for Irene to prevent it from becoming a death wise retirement from my point of view. I heard of two separate instances of people getting killed inside their homes but also heard the majority of the deaths were caused by people not using their brains. (If I've received bad data please correct me). There were a number of other storms that caused damage on the same level as Irene who weren't retired well before our money these days had less value than back in the times. On the other hand, I live down in South Carolina and not the North East which were ultimately the people who ended up with the real problems. Shawn
Wilma in 2005?? Off topic.. but was wondering.. is it true that Wilma had the lowest pressure of a hurricane on record around 882mb at one point as a cat.5?

In the Atlantic Basin yes. Also one of the smallest eyes at 2nm I believe without checking. I think Typhoon Tip might have gotten to 879 in the WPAC. Edit: Tip got to 870!! SnowGoose69
We are gonna run out of names because the criteria to retire names is so low. I vote no, but thats more of an opinion. That won't ever happen, the hurricane list is still loaded with geezer names that nobody has named their children since 1935, the day we start having to use names like Asher, Aiden, Amber, and Noah we know we're in trouble, but even today it seems the names tend to lag 20-30 years behind common day given names....alot of the recent retired replacements while more modern names are names that people in their 30s and 40s have vs. children or teenagers. And then there is of course the idiocy of using non-American names, the way I see it is that the agency responsible for the basin should only use names from their country not names such as Pablo, Edouard, or Gaston. Sparkleberry
Perhaps it could have been two questions: Will Irene be retired? vs Should Irene be retired?
