KEITH L.I
Part of the problem is that folks now expect monster winters every year...we are due for something less than stellar at some point....this board will be unreadable if we get off to a bad start this year... totally agree..we are big time due for a crapper..every winter can't be a blockbuster..in the 70's thru the 90's it was like pulling teeth to get it to snow around here..For many of the young posters they might be getting a bit spoiled..especially with wintry Decembers..in the 3 decades just mentioned to get a 2 inch snowfall was alot in December..they were usually mild and snowless

Guest Pamela
It started to turn in 92-93, that was a good winter. It turned for interior SW CT and Westchester with the Dec 1992 storm...for Long Island and NYC with the cold snowy February two months later.... Guest Pamela
the island did better than most with those storms that missed S and E. January 1982 was a *great* winter month on L.I....January and February 1987 were also....there was that little Norlun Trough that put down up to a foot in December 1988 that avoided everyone else....I've always considerd November 1989 the best "winter" month on the Island during the 3/1987 - 1/1993 stretch. MJO812
ugh-JB's column today is depressing....talks about 01-02 and shows the water temps map from that year and notes its not all that different from this year....mentions solar activity increasing and trop cooling-sounds as if we dont get the cold Dec into Jan we're screwed... What is Henry M saying about this winter? I really want to know.
Sundog
i hate the we are due argument. By that logic, I wouldn't have grown up in a snowless decade, save for one good storm in 1983 Agreed. I would go further and say except for 93-94 and 95-96 most winters were pretty terrible from 1980-2000. Sure there was one or two storms here or there but that doesn't make a winter great. Not one 10 inch storm was recorded at the city from 83-93. I mean that's ridiculous.

uncle W
you can count the amount of great winters on one hand from 1970 to 1999...35" or more...Since 2000 you need two hands...

The 1980 - 2000 stretch is hardly the first bad one...the 1920's, 1930's, 1950's, and 1970's were all bad snow decades at KNYC....
Guest Pamela
During the LIA KNYC was probably a borderline snow town....since it ended it has not been...if we are heading back into one...as some posit....then it may recapture that past glory.... Brian5671
What is Henry M saying about this winter? I really want to know. Cold and snow from Dec 1st to April 1st...after April 1st, we blowtorch with frequent severe outbreaks and 90+ for the rest of the summer.
SnoSki14
If this winter turns out bad, then that's what it is. We can't expect every winter to deliver 40+ inches of snow. We had a couple of excellent winters with multiple amazing storms. This October we had a historic snow event that was beyond belief, even when the whole month of October was very warm, we still got a historic storm. So I'm thinking this won't be a 2001-2002 where we got nothing. I think this will be the type of winter where it's mostly warm but every now and then, we get a big snow event from a coastal. In reality we could have a very mild winter overall but still get 30-40+ inches of snow.

Sundog
Central Park already has enough snow to keep it from being the least snowy winter on record and it's not even November 15th. Who saw that storm coming? Who knows what will happen this winter. We could be going through a bad stretch and not even know that a massive storm is set to hit us several days later. let the season play out and let's leave out the references to blockbuster winters and epic fail winters. Stormlover74
We've had plenty of good storms in otherwise bad winters, 90-91 is a prime example. A good storm right after christmas (even though it melted in 3 days), the 1/11/91 storm brought 5-6" before changing to sleet and rain and then a surprise event at the end of february. I'm not sure the temperature departures that winter but I don't remember any really cold air. Most of the mid 80s were the same way. I remember having at least 2 days off from school each winter from 85-88 so we had at least a couple good 4"+ events. Nothing great but still decent snowfalls. 01-02 was a pretty extreme example that hopefully won't be repeated. Central Park already has enough snow to keep it from being the least snowy winter on record and it's not even November 15th. Who saw that storm coming? Who knows what will happen this winter. Stormlover74
We at least had a good 6"+ event in '08 that was mostly all snow after the sleetfests of 07 07-08 was by far the worse for me......I would take a 06-07 before that horrible year.
