If this anamoly showing up over the davis straight is real, then I would start to favor the colder euro, cmc, and nogaps solution over the latest gfs solution and 12z euro yesterday. This is a nice +PNA/-NAO couplet. Time sensitive.

I cant remember the last time I saw so much blue over North America.

It's actually a pretty decent setup for this early in the season. Couple of factors going against us like lack of snow cover to the north to keep the low level cold air from moderating rapidly and antecedent relative warmth but the 500mb pattern is a keeper as are the 850 temps.

AMSU UAH satellite analysis of the lower troposphere shows rapid cooling with global temperatures near record low levels for the 2002-2011 period, only .16C above the record low daily set back in 2008. This is a significant drop from what we saw over the summer with large positive anomalies, and GFS surface analysis pegs the 8-day anomaly at .13C, also a decline, and it's a warm-biased model. That could explain why we're starting to see so much more blue on the map, along with cold air brought in from the PV near the Canadian Archipelago.

This time of year, you really need to have things on your side upstream. A 50/50 is vital

not really, the block is far more important to push down the SE ridge, the cold comes in from behind the front and the HP won't slip east here so the 50/50's role becomes less important.

Either way, its a long shot no matter that.

Ehh, if you look at the KU's most of them dont have a clear cut block over the DS. However, nearly all of them have some form of a 50/50 regardless of wether or not the vort closed off or remained open.
